What it is

Monthly grocery money on a card. SNAP can help keep food at home while treatment takes time and income.

A recent pay drop can change the SNAP answer, because Social Services judges it on this month's income. Passing the screen is not the amount; rent, utilities and child care come off before the amount is set.

Eligibility rules
  • Most households use Maryland's broad-based categorical eligibility screen, below 200% of poverty.
  • Most families are screened at 200% of poverty: $4,442 a month for three people, $5,360 for four, through September 2026. Rent, utilities and child care then set the amount.
  • Categorically eligible households do not have vehicle or bank-account verification.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery benefits with no application charge.
  • Benefits within seven calendar days for households meeting an expedited-service test.
What the help covers
  • The agency calculates the amount after household and expense checks. A pay drop can also change an existing award when reported.
  • For a three-person household, the maximum monthly allotment is $785 in federal fiscal year 2026. The actual calculation can produce no benefit even after an initial income screen passes.

  1. Ask the local Department of Social Services about SNAP, or use myMDTHINK if you decide to apply.
  2. Have current pay stubs, identification, rent or mortgage costs and utility amounts ready.
  3. If money and food are running short, ask whether your household meets an expedited-service test.

After you apply
  • Ordinary processing takes up to 30 days. Expedited service includes households below $100 in liquid resources and $150 in monthly gross income.
  • Another expedited test compares income plus liquid resources with rent or mortgage plus utilities. A separate test applies to destitute migrant or seasonal farm-worker households with under $100 in liquid resources.
Good to know

Medical expenses receive a special deduction only for an elderly or disabled household member, and only above $35 monthly.
