Massachusetts program

MassHealth for you, not just your child

MassHealth coverage for the parent as well as the child [Standard or CarePlus].

What it is

MassHealth coverage for the parent as well as the child [Standard or CarePlus].

A drop in pay can change your own health coverage options too. The same application can assess you and your child. The adult income line is lower than the child’s, so the decisions can differ.

Eligibility rules
  • Massachusetts parents living with a child can be considered for Standard. Other eligible adults are considered for CarePlus.
  • The adult line is 133% of poverty, judged on this month’s income; MassHealth decides whose income counts.
  • March 2026 monthly limits: 2 people $2,399; 3 $3,028; 4 $3,658; 5 $4,288.
  • This month’s income matters. A yearly figure divided by 12 can miss a recent pay cut.
What you get
  • Adult MassHealth coverage with no premium at this income level.
What the help covers
  • Adult coverage can protect the parent during months when work coverage changes. The exact coverage type appears on the decision.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the financial counselor to include the parent on the family’s MassHealth application.
  2. Have current or final pay stubs, identification and Social Security number ready, along with any existing insurance.

After you ask
  • The application notice and MassHealth can identify the decision deadline for your route. The counselor can ask about missing information, temporary coverage and urgent care while you wait.
  • The Health Connector separately reviews help using expected annual household income. A pay change can affect either that calculation or MassHealth’s current-month calculation.
Good to know

Your child being approved does not cover you. If you are over the adult line, the Health Connector is the route.

Other details
  • Existing work insurance and its end date belong on the application so the counselor can compare the options.
Ask your social worker

“Could I qualify for MassHealth too, and how would it compare with my current insurance or a Connector plan? If it would help, could you include me on the application?”

Why I’m asking: I want to avoid a gap in my own care while caring for my child.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Report this month’s income and add yourself to the child’s application.

Your social worker

The hospital counsellor or assister files it with you.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
MassHealth.
Ask your social worker
“Can you add me to the same MassHealth application as my child, and have it judged on this month’s income rather than last year’s?”

How to apply

First step: Add yourself to your child’s MassHealth application this month.

  1. Add the parents to the child’s MassHealth application the month a paycheck changes.
  2. Report the drop in income in the month it happens.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Add the parent to the same MassHealth application as the child.

What to gather

  • This month’s pay stubs or the last one
  • Your ID and Social Security number

How long: MassHealth has 45 days for an ordinary application.

What a yes looks like

A notice with your own coverage dates and a plan choice.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If the income was too high, the Health Connector is the next door and a coverage loss opens a 60-day window.

Watch out

  • It is this month’s income that counts, so file in the month the pay drops.
  • Go on the same application as your child rather than starting a new one.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

MassHealth for a parent at 133% of the poverty line: $3,658 a month for four people, $3,028 for three, $2,399 for two.

  • $3,658/month — Adult line, household of 4, published monthly cell (133% of poverty)
  • $3,028/month — Adult line, household of 3, published monthly cell
  • $2,399/month — Adult line, household of 2, published monthly cell
  • $4,288/month — Adult line, household of 5, published monthly cell

Covers: Adult MassHealth coverage

Legal protection: Decided on this month’s income

What it costs the family: No premium at this income level.

The trap: Apply on the same application as the child rather than waiting. It is judged on this month’s income, so the month a paycheck stops is the month to file.
