Massachusetts program

Grocery money each month (SNAP)

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card [SNAP] through the Department of Transitional Assistance.

What it is

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card [SNAP] through the Department of Transitional Assistance.

Food costs bite when work income drops. DTA checks this month's income against its screen, which can sit above the federal line, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. A family with almost nothing coming in has benefits by the seventh day.

Eligibility rules
  • DTA decides the SNAP household using food-purchasing and preparation arrangements and required family relationships. Spouses and children under 22 living with parents generally belong together. A tax household or address headcount alone is not enough.
  • Massachusetts’s usual family categorical-eligibility route uses a 200%-of-poverty gross screen and generally no asset test. Different categorical, older-person or disability rules can require another review.
  • Effective February 1, 2026, the usual monthly family gross screen is: 1 person $2,660; 2 $3,607; 3 $4,553; 4 $5,500; 5 $6,447; 6 $7,393; 7 $8,340; 8 $9,287. The chart adds $947 per additional person. DTA applies the correct household, income exclusions and exceptions.
  • Most families have no savings test.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery benefits on a card, with no charge to apply.
  • Benefits by the seventh calendar day for households that meet an expedited test.
What the help covers
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, maximum monthly allotments are: 1 person $298; 2 $546; 3 $785; 4 $994; 5 $1,183; 6 $1,421; 7 $1,571; 8 $1,789. Add $218 per additional person. Actual benefits depend on the calculation.
  • An existing case can be reviewed after a work or income change. DTA confirms whether an increased or supplemental benefit is due and for which month; a reported change alone does not promise a same-month payment.
  • For that same federal benefit year, the net monthly limits where applicable are: 1 person $1,305; 2 $1,763; 3 $2,221; 4 $2,680; 5 $3,138; 6 $3,596; 7 $4,055; 8 $4,513. The minimum for an eligible one- or two-person household is $24.
  • Those federal benefit-year figures end September 30, 2026. DTA confirms the replacement allotments, net limits and deductions for benefit periods from October 1, 2026.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the social worker to help with a Department of Transitional Assistance SNAP application and expedited screening.
  2. Have current income, rent or mortgage, utility expenses, identification and Social Security numbers ready.
  3. Include changes in pay and ask what additional verification DTA needs.

After you ask
  • A decision names the household and monthly benefit. A denial explains the test used and the appeal date.
  • Income changes are handled under the reporting rules DTA gives you.
  • DTA normally processes SNAP within 30 calendar days. Expedited benefits are due by day seven when a qualifying test is met. DTA checks identity for expedited service without waiting for every ordinary verification document.
  • An expedited route applies when monthly gross income is no more than $150 and liquid assets no more than $100. Another applies when income plus liquid assets is below rent or mortgage plus applicable utilities.
Good to know

Passing the income screen is not the amount; rent and utilities set that. SNAP counts everyone who shares meals with you, which is not the same household MassHealth counts.

Other details
  • Medical deductions apply to a household member age 60 or older or meeting SNAP’s disability definition. Cancer bills alone do not establish that category. DTA can confirm the current deduction and allowable unreimbursed expenses.
  • Eligible medical expenses can include premiums, treatment, prescriptions and certain medical travel or lodging. Special diets do not qualify. DTA can check the applicable expense threshold and any current standard-deduction waiver.
Ask your social worker

“Could SNAP help with our grocery costs, and would we meet the faster-processing test? Could you explain the reporting responsibilities and help us apply if it fits?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand what food help is available after DTA considers our actual income and expenses.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply, ask for the expedited screen, and report income changes.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can help file the same day.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Department of Transitional Assistance.
Ask the agency
“My income has dropped and my child is in cancer treatment. Can you screen me for expedited grocery benefits today and tell me what verification you still need?”

How to apply

First step: Apply to the Department of Transitional Assistance and ask for the expedited screen the same day.

  1. Apply the month income drops and ask for the expedited screen that day.
  2. Report a pay drop within the reporting rules so the amount rises.
  3. Keep medical costs noted, because a deduction can apply.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply to the Department of Transitional Assistance and ask for the expedited screen on the day you file.

What to gather

  • This month’s income for everyone in the home
  • Rent or mortgage and utility costs
  • Identification and Social Security numbers

How long: Seven calendar days on the expedited route, otherwise the ordinary decision time.

What a yes looks like

A card with a monthly amount, and a notice naming the household counted.

What a no looks like, and the next move

The notice names the test that failed. Ask which income figure was used and appeal by the date shown.

Watch out

  • The current state income table was not published, so nobody should tell you that you are over the line without running it.
  • Ask for the expedited screen on the day you file, not later.
  • Report a pay drop promptly: the amount goes up and a supplement can follow for that month.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Monthly grocery money on a card. Where the household has almost nothing coming in, benefits are issued by the seventh calendar day after the application.

  • $7 — Calendar days for expedited issue after filing
  • $150/month — Gross monthly income in the older expedited low-income branch
  • $100 — Liquid assets in the older expedited low-income branch

Legal protection: Vehicles are not counted in the state rule that was read · A reported change that takes net income to zero brings a supplement for that month

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
the current Massachusetts gross-income table was not published in this research, so no state line is printed; the federal screen sits at 130% of poverty and Massachusetts screens above it
Assets
vehicles are not counted in the state rule that was read
Expedited
by the seventh calendar day where the household meets the low-income or shelter-cost branch
Residency
Massachusetts

The trap: The current Massachusetts income table could not be read in this research, so no state line is printed here. Apply and let the worker run the numbers rather than deciding you are over.
