Monthly cash aid when income has stopped

Monthly cash help for eligible families with children [Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children].

What it is

Monthly cash help for eligible families with children [Transitional Aid to Families with Dependent Children].

Cash assistance helps when income falls or stops. DTA takes deductions off your income and compares what is left with a need standard for your family size. Not everyone at home is counted in the benefit, and a child on SSI is left out.

Eligibility rules
  • Two tests: household income under $4,553 a month for three people, then income after deductions under the need standard, $861 for three ($901 with the rent allowance).
  • The assistance unit can differ from the financial household and everyone at the address. For a relative caregiver, DTA needs the legal relationship and proposed child-only unit before deciding whose income counts.
  • Nonexempt units have a 24-month limit within a continuous 60 months.
  • DTA takes $200 off wages before comparing with its standard, and can ignore more of a new job’s earnings for a time; ask.
What you get
  • Monthly cash assistance based on the eligible family members and income.
  • An extra $40 per month where the rent allowance applies.
  • An advance can be available for an applicant in immediate need.
What the help covers
  • Published monthly payment standards are $713 for a unit of 2, $861 for 3, $1,003 for 4 and $1,150 for 5. Actual income can reduce the grant.
  • With the $40 rent allowance, the standards are $901 for 3 and $1,043 for 4.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital social worker to help you complete the Department of Transitional Assistance application.
  2. Bring current household income, rent or mortgage papers, and identification for the children.
  3. Describe any immediate need and ask how full-time care for your child affects the work rules.

After you ask
  • The decision standard is 30 days when required verification arrives within 22 days of the application.
  • The notice identifies the unit, income test and amount. A denial can be reviewed or appealed by the date on the notice.
Good to know

A child receiving SSI is left out of the cash-benefit unit. A parent-only benefit can still be possible.

Other details
  • DTA can check whether a caregiver exemption changes work requirements, time limits or both. Caring for a child with cancer does not establish either exemption by itself. The care needs and supporting evidence matter.
  • DTA can confirm resource rules, child-only grant conditions and whether immediate-need or one-time help is available. The counselor can explain any repayment condition before you decide.
Ask your social worker

“Would cash assistance help our family after the income and SSI rules are worked out? What responsibilities would come with it, and could you help us apply and explain my child’s care needs?”

Why I’m asking: I want to know what monthly cash support is possible without misunderstanding the household or caregiver rules.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply, send verifications quickly and mention the immediate need.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can write to confirm the child’s treatment and your caregiving.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Department of Transitional Assistance.
Ask the agency
“I need to apply for cash assistance. My child is in cancer treatment and I am the caregiver. Can you tell me about an advance for immediate need and about the caregiver exemption?”

How to apply

First step: Apply to the Department of Transitional Assistance the month income stops, and say you have an immediate need.

  1. Apply the month income stops and say you have an immediate need.
  2. Ask about the caregiver exemption from the work rules and the time limit.
  3. Send the verifications within 22 days so the 30-day decision applies.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply to the Department of Transitional Assistance and say you have an immediate need.

What to gather

  • This month’s income for everyone in the home
  • Rent or mortgage papers
  • Identification for the children

How long: 30 days when verifications arrive within 22 days of applying.

What a yes looks like

A monthly payment on a card, with a notice naming the amount.

What a no looks like, and the next move

The notice names the test that failed. If it is income, ask which test and appeal by the date shown.

Watch out

  • There are two tests: net countable income against the standard, and a separate household ceiling. Apply rather than judging it yourself.
  • A child receiving SSI is outside the assistance unit, though a parent-only unit can remain.
  • Ask about the caregiver exemption from the work rules if you are caring for your child full time.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Monthly cash: $713 for a unit of two, $861 for three, $1,003 for four, with $40 more where the rent allowance applies. The published household ceiling is twice the poverty line.

  • $713/month — Need and payment standard, unit of 2
  • $861/month — Need and payment standard, unit of 3
  • $1,003/month — Need and payment standard, unit of 4
  • $1,150/month — Need and payment standard, unit of 5
  • $901/month — Standard with the rent allowance, unit of 3
  • $1,043/month — Standard with the rent allowance, unit of 4
  • $30 — Days to decide when verifications arrive within 22 days

Legal protection: A child receiving SSI is outside the assistance unit, and a parent-only unit can remain · An applicant in immediate need can be offered an advance on the cash benefit

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
net countable income at or under the need standard, and household income at or under twice the poverty line
Unit
the assistance unit, which is not everyone in the home; a child on SSI is outside it
Time limit
24 months in a continuous 60 for units that are not exempt
Residency
Massachusetts
Processing standard
30 days when verifications arrive within 22 days of the application

The trap: Two different tests: a net countable income test against the need standard, and a separate gross household ceiling. Neither is a gross-wage rule on its own, so apply rather than deciding at the doorstep.
