What it is

WIC covers eligible young children and people who are pregnant or recently pregnant. The clinic reviews nutrition needs and income. Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish income eligibility.
Eligibility rules
- Under 5, or pregnant or recently pregnant; each person is checked separately.
- Income at or under 185% of the poverty level, or participation in a qualifying program such as Medicaid, SNAP or TANF. Michigan’s June 1, 2026 table gives $4,212 a month for three people and $5,088 for four.
- The local Michigan WIC clinic can explain its residency and documentation rules, including citizenship or immigration questions. WIC has its own rules; Medicaid’s status rules do not decide WIC eligibility.
What you get
- A monthly food package for each eligible child, usable alongside Food Assistance Program.
- Nutrition support and referrals.
What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

- Ask the social worker to help find a local clinic through the Michigan WIC webpage and discuss a clinic appointment.
- Bring proof of income or qualifying benefit participation, identification, and proof of address for the person WIC will assess.

After you apply
- WIC checks each person separately. A child aged five or older does not qualify through the child category; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent can be assessed separately.
Good to know
WIC can review your younger child using your income now; qualifying benefit participation can simplify the income check, but you do not need to wait for another program’s decision.
Other details
- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
