Time at the hospital can unsettle a sibling's child care. A new certificate needs a parent working 25 hours a week and income under the line. If you already have one, the absence rules decide how many hospital days are paid, so ask before a long admission.
Eligibility rules
- The manual requires 25 hours of work weekly, full-time study or approved training. Income must be at or below 85% of state median income.
- CCPP ordinarily requires 25 hours of weekly work or qualifying full-time study or training, an eligible child and child-care service, and income within 85% of state median income. MDHS confirms the current dollar table and family copay; the website’s table labeled 2021 does not establish a 2026 limit. Special-needs and disabled-parent categories need their own documentation. A sibling does not automatically receive the sick child’s special-needs priority. New certificates have waitlist and priority rules.

- An approved long-term absence can preserve a certificate under the manual’s specific conditions, with only five provider-paid days per month for that arrangement. That is not the general payment rule for every absence. The social worker, child-care office and provider can check communication, approval and whether the place can be kept.

What happens next
- An approved certificate identifies the child care service and hours. The social worker can document hospital admission dates for an absence request.
- If a sibling will miss child care for a long hospital stay, ask the child-care office in writing to approve the absence before 30 days pass, or the certificate can end. The center is paid for only five absent days a month, so agree with it how the place is kept.
Good to know
A parent who has stopped work to be at the hospital cannot start this new. An approved absence keeps the place, but not every absent day is paid.
