Mississippi program
Fertility preservation before treatment
Your oncology team can discuss fertility preservation and help check what your insurance pays.
What it is
Your oncology team can discuss fertility preservation and help check what your insurance pays.
For an older child or teenager, the oncology team raises this before the treatment that carries the risk. Whether your plan pays is a question for the plan, and the procedure and the yearly storage are usually billed separately, so ask about both.
Eligibility rules
- The oncology team assesses whether an option is appropriate for the child or teenager. Plan terms govern the coverage review.
- Mississippi does not require plans to cover fertility preservation, so it depends on your plan's own terms. Ask the plan in writing about the procedure and the yearly storage fee separately.
What you get
- A discussion of preservation options and timing with the cancer team.
- A separate coverage answer for the procedure and for storage.
What this includes
- Preservation and storage are separate costs to check with the plan. A referral does not itself establish insurance coverage.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the oncologist whether preservation is relevant and possible before your child’s treatment.
- If you choose to explore it, ask the plan for written coverage details for both preservation and storage.

What happens next
- A written response should distinguish the procedure, storage and any required approval.
Good to know
Whether an option fits is a medical question for the oncology team, not an insurance one.
Other details
- The cancer team can explain which decisions are time-sensitive for the planned treatment.
Official sources
“If preservation is relevant for our child, what are the benefits and drawbacks, and could you help us request a referral and coverage review?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand the options without separating them from our child’s treatment timing.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Ask the plan in writing, and keep the answer.
Your social worker
The oncology team raises the timing and can refer you.
The care team
The oncologist says whether preservation is possible before this child's treatment starts.
- Who decides
- Your health plan.
- Ask the care team
- “If fertility preservation is possible for my child, when do we need to decide, and what does our plan cover?”
How to apply
First step: Ask the oncologist whether preservation is possible for your child, and when the decision has to be made.
- Wait for the oncology team to raise it; they know the timing.
- When they do, ask the plan in writing about preservation and about storage separately.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Ask the plan in writing whether it covers preservation, and separately whether it covers storage.
What to gather
- Your insurance card and the plan document
- What the oncology team says about timing
How long: Decided in days when it is relevant, because it has to happen before treatment.
What a yes looks like
A written confirmation of what the plan covers, including storage.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask the team whether the hospital has a route for families whose plan refuses.
Watch out
- Preservation and storage are separate questions in most plans. Ask about both.
- No Mississippi mandate could be read, and no statement that there is none either.
- The oncology team leads the timing on this. It is not a first-week task.
Dates that change this
2026-09-11: No Mississippi fertility-preservation provision could be read, and no authoritative statement of absence either. The official code portal did not return statutory text. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
No Mississippi mandate could be read. Whether preservation is covered, and whether storage is covered, is a question for your own plan.
Legal protection: No state mandate could be confirmed in either direction
What it costs the family: Unknown: it depends entirely on the plan.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Age
- raised by the oncology team for an older child or teenager
- Plan type
- depends on the plan; no state mandate could be read
- Residency
- Mississippi
Expect friction on: No state mandate could be read either way
The trap: Coverage of preservation and coverage of storage afterwards are two different questions in most plans. Ask about both, in writing, before anything is done.
