Help with hospital bills
A hospital’s financial-assistance office can review bills under its written policy.
What it is
A hospital’s financial-assistance office can review bills under its written policy.
Insurance does not settle whether a hospital offers financial assistance. The office needs the bills and financial information its policy requires. A written policy explains which charges and income rules apply.
Eligibility rules
- The treating hospital’s policy controls its assistance decision.
- UMMC considers insured and uninsured patients for financial assistance. Its application addresses medically necessary hospital and physician charges and asks for identity, household income, Mississippi residence and other-payer information. The benefit coordinator can confirm the current income bands, any high-bill exception, approval duration and participating billers from the written policy. An income estimate alone does not decide hospital assistance.
What you get
- A review for reduced hospital charges under the hospital’s policy.
- The written financial-assistance rules and application.
What this includes
- Federal nonprofit-hospital financial-assistance rules apply where the hospital is covered by those rules.
- A hospital’s assistance policy and any applicable collection law both matter. Federal rules for covered tax-exempt hospitals can pause extraordinary collection actions while a timely complete application is decided, but they do not promise a pause on every bill. Ask the benefit coordinator to identify the rule for this hospital and confirm any account hold in writing; a lawsuit has a separate deadline.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the hospital benefit coordinator for the written financial-assistance policy and form.
- Bring bills, insurance statements and the financial records the form requests.
- Ask whether an insured family’s out-of-pocket charges can be included.

What happens next
- You have 30 days to return the form and the hospital answers within 15 days of a complete application. Ask in writing whether collection is paused while it decides.
Good to know
A hospital’s assistance policy may not cover every clinician’s separate bill. The office can identify which charges it includes.

“What are the benefits and drawbacks of requesting hospital financial help, and could you help us apply if our bills fit the policy?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether the hospital can reduce charges our insurance leaves to us.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Ask for the written policy and the income line, and keep every bill.
Your social worker
The benefit coordinator sends the policy and the application form.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The hospital's financial assistance office.
- Ask the billing office
- “Please send me the written financial assistance policy and the income line, and tell me whether an insured family with large out-of-pocket costs can apply.”
How to apply
First step: Ring the benefit coordinator on 601-815-9430 and ask for the written policy and the application form.
- Ask the benefit coordinator for the written financial assistance policy and the income line.
- Ask whether an insured family with large out-of-pocket costs can apply, and by when.
- The benefit coordinator can review itemized bills, insurance corrections and assistance options; a court notice has its own response deadline.

Where it starts: For Children’s of Mississippi/UMMC bills: benefit coordinators, 601-815-9430. For another hospital’s bills: its own financial-assistance office.
What to gather
- Every bill and statement, itemised
- Proof of household income
- Your insurance explanation of benefits
How long: UMMC’s posted form allows 30 days to return the application, 15 additional days for missing information, and says it will send a written decision within 15 days after receiving a complete application and documents. The form uses both its date and its mailing date for the 30-day clock, so the benefit coordinator can confirm your deadline. Ask separately, in writing, whether collection is on hold and which accounts the hold covers.
What a yes looks like
A written discount or write-off, with the amount on it.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask which income line was used and whether an insured family with high costs has a separate route.
Watch out
- No Mississippi charity-care or debt law could be read. That is unresolved, not proof there is none.
- Children's of Mississippi keeps its written policy behind a login, so the income line is not public. Ask for it.
- Ask in writing. A verbal answer is not something you can hold anyone to.
Dates that change this
2026-09-11: No Mississippi charity-care law, collection waiting period, credit-reporting limit, interest cap or debt-relief programme could be read: the official code portal did not return statutory text. Absence is not established either. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
No Mississippi charity-care or medical-debt law could be read. The hospital's own written policy is what to ask for.
Legal protection: Federal rules for nonprofit hospitals still apply · Children's of Mississippi's summary says insured patients are not shut out of its assistance policy
What it costs the family: Whatever the hospital's policy says, which is not published.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Conditions
- the hospital's own policy decides; no state floor could be read
- Residency
- Mississippi
Decisions this site cannot make: The hospital's own financial assistance decision
Expect friction on: Children's of Mississippi keeps its written policy behind a login
The trap: Ask for the written policy, not a verbal answer. Ask what the income line is, whether an insured family with big out-of-pocket costs can apply, and how long you have to apply after the bill.
