Travel benefits depend on your child’s coverage and the trip. Medicaid can approve overnight help for distant care and one accompanying adult. A CHIP plan must confirm its own meal, lodging and escort benefits.
Eligibility rules
- The trip must be medically necessary for a Mississippi Medicaid or CHIP member.
- Overnight expenses require that care is unavailable nearer home and that the facility does not supply meals or a bed. The accompanying adult must be at least 18.

- Medicaid-approved overnight meals and lodging for your child and one accompanying adult.
What this includes
- The adult’s meals and lodging need escort certification and prior approval. Only one adult’s overnight expenses are included.
- Medicaid can approve medically necessary overnight meals and lodging for distant covered care. An attendant needs medical certification, advance approval and receipts for allowed reimbursement. The broker confirms current dollar limits, payment arrangements and which contract covers the trip. CHIP plans must separately confirm any meals, lodging and attendant benefit in writing before booking.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the social worker which transport number goes with your child’s plan and whether repeat trips can be arranged.
- Have the appointment, destination and insurance card ready. Routine trips need three business days’ notice.
- Ask about overnight approval and the adult escort paperwork before paying for a room or meals.

- Ask what the broker pays for meals and lodging on an overnight trip, and get it in writing.
- Ask the clinic to certify that an adult needs to travel with your child, before the first overnight trip.

- The appointment dates, times and the clinic address
- Receipts for any meal or room on an overnight trip
How long: Three business days for a routine booking. A discharge or a return from emergency care is arranged the same day.
What a yes looks like
A confirmed pick-up time and a trip number. Keep the number in case the car does not come.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask which rule the no was on. If it was the three-day notice, ask whether it counts as a discharge trip.
Watch out
- Routine trips need three business days' notice. A ride home from a discharge does not.
- The meals and lodging for the adult who goes along have to be certified and prior-authorised first, with receipts afterwards.
- Which number you ring depends on whether your child is in a plan or on fee-for-service Medicaid. Ask which one you are.
Dates that change this
2026-09-11: Modivcare describes itself as the statewide coordinator for fee-for-service Medicaid rides on 866-331-6004. Its contract and transition dates were not published, and each coordinated-care plan arranges its own rides through its member line. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

The trap: A routine trip must be booked at least three business days ahead. The exception matters: a ride home from a hospital discharge, or a return trip from emergency care, does not need the notice. For the adult who goes with the child, the need and the kind of help have to be certified by a provider first and receipts have to go back to the broker, or the meals and lodging are not paid.
