Mississippi program

Health coverage for you, the parent

Your own Medicaid or a HealthCare.gov plan can cover your care. Your child’s policy does not cover you.

What it is

Your own Medicaid or a HealthCare.gov plan can cover your care. Your child’s policy does not cover you.

Your child's Medicaid does not insure you. Mississippi's parent line is a few hundred dollars a month, and the state did not widen Medicaid to adults. A parent over that line and under the poverty line has no Medicaid and no premium help; above the poverty line, HealthCare.gov offers a bought plan with premium help.

Eligibility rules
  • A dependent child under 18 must live with the parent or caretaker in Mississippi.
  • From March 1, 2026, the monthly parent base line for four people is $462, or $600 with the printed allowance. The allowance figure for three is $498.
  • Base limits for households of 2–6 range from $306 to $619. Allowance limits range from $396 to $804.
  • The parent-income group is not the only Medicaid route. Pregnancy and postpartum coverage, SSI or another disability category, the Working Disabled program, former-foster-youth coverage and certain other categories have their own rules. Limited family-planning or emergency coverage is not a substitute for full insurance. A coverage-gap conclusion also needs the parent’s own coverage, expected annual tax-household income and HealthCare.gov rules—not only the child’s current monthly income screen.
What you get
  • Your own Medicaid coverage if you meet the parent rules.
  • A HealthCare.gov plan, with premium help when its rules are met.
What this includes
  • HealthCare.gov premium help is separate from Mississippi Medicaid. The enhanced pandemic-era premium help ended December 31, 2025.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the hospital benefit coordinator to include you in the coverage discussion and ACCESS Mississippi application.
  2. Have current income records and any job-coverage end date ready.
  3. Ask a HealthCare.gov assister to compare plans and premium help if Medicaid does not fit.

What happens next
  • The Medicaid decision standard is 45 days.
  • The job-coverage-loss enrollment window runs 60 days before and 60 days after coverage ends. A Medicaid or CHIP eligibility loss gives 90 days after the loss.
Good to know

If you fall in that gap, the hospital's benefit coordinator can say what help exists for an uninsured parent. Losing job coverage opens 60 days to buy a plan.

Other details
  • HealthCare.gov assistance is available at 1-800-318-2596. Missing a special-enrollment window can mean waiting for open enrollment unless another qualifying event applies.
  • The hospital financial counselor can explain assistance for your own uninsured care.
Ask your social worker

“What are the benefits and drawbacks of the coverage I could get for myself, and could you help me choose an application route?”

Why I’m asking: I need to understand my own coverage separately from my child’s insurance.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Ask to be tested on your child's application, and write down the date any job coverage ends.

Your social worker

The hospital financial counsellor can tell you what the hospital does for an uninsured parent while you sort this out.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Mississippi Division of Medicaid for the parent group; HealthCare.gov decides premium help for a bought plan.
Ask your social worker
“Can I be tested for my own coverage on the same application, and what does the hospital do for an uninsured parent?”

How to apply

First step: Ask to be tested on your child's application. If job coverage is ending, go to HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596 within 60 days of the end date.

  1. Ask to be tested on the same application as your child.
  2. If job coverage is ending, write down the end date: the 60 days run from it.
  3. If you already have a bought plan and your pay has dropped, tell HealthCare.gov now rather than at renewal.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Ask to be tested on the same application as your child at access.ms.gov. For a bought plan go to HealthCare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596.

What to gather

  • The date job coverage ends, in writing from the employer
  • Expected household income for the year
  • This month's pay for each adult

How long: Sixty days before or after job coverage ends, ninety days after Medicaid or children's coverage ends. The state works to 45 days on the parent group.

Clock: Sixty days from the day job coverage ends to buy a plan, and sixty days before it ends.

What a yes looks like

A notice adding you to Medicaid, or a bought plan starting the month after you enrol.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Over the parent line and under the poverty line there is nothing to appeal: that is the gap. Ask the hospital's financial counsellor what it does for an uninsured parent, and come back if income rises or a job plan appears.

Watch out

  • The child's coverage does not cover the parent, and nobody says so unprompted.
  • Miss the 60 days after job coverage ends and you wait for open enrolment. Losing Medicaid gives 90 days instead.
  • The larger pandemic-era premium help ended on December 31, 2025, so a bought plan costs more this year.

Dates that change this

2026-01-01: The larger pandemic-era premium help ended on December 31, 2025, which the Insurance Commissioner acknowledged in September 2026. A bought plan costs more this year than the figure a friend remembers.

What it is worth

A parent's own Medicaid stops at $462 a month for four people, $600 on the printed allowance column. Above that and under the poverty line, Mississippi has nothing for a parent.

  • $462/month — Parent and caretaker line, household of 4, printed base
  • $600/month — Parent and caretaker line, household of 4, printed allowance column
  • $498/month — Parent and caretaker line, household of 3, printed allowance column
  • $60 — Days to buy a plan after job coverage ends
  • $90 — Days to buy a plan after Medicaid or children's coverage ends

Covers: Full Medicaid for the parent when the line is met · A bought plan with premium help when income is over the poverty line

Legal protection: 60 days before or after job coverage ends to buy a plan · 90 days after Medicaid or children's coverage ends

What it costs the family: No premium for the parent and caretaker group. A bought plan costs what the premium help leaves.

Decisions this site cannot make: Division of Medicaid decision on the parent and caretaker group · HealthCare.gov eligibility for premium help

Expect friction on: Mississippi did not widen Medicaid to adults, so there is a stretch of income with no door at all

The trap: Do not assume your own coverage arrives with your child's. They are different groups with different lines, and the parent line is a small fraction of the child's. The parent group also needs a dependent child under 18 living at home.
