Monthly grocery money (SNAP)
SNAP puts grocery money on a card each month when your household meets the food-help rules.
What it is
SNAP puts grocery money on a card each month when your household meets the food-help rules.
A pay cut can change eligibility for grocery help. Mississippi checks income and allowed expenses to set the monthly benefit. A qualifying elderly or disabled household member changes the income test and can open a medical deduction.
Eligibility rules
- The ordinary gross-income test is 130% of poverty. A household with an elderly or qualifying disabled member uses a net-income test instead.
- For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, the monthly gross limit is $3,483 for four people and $2,888 for three.
- Savings must be under $3,000 ($4,750 from October 2026 if someone in the home is over 60 or disabled). Your car does not count. A family where everyone gets TANF or SSI skips the income and savings tests.
What you get
- Grocery money on an electronic benefit card each month.
- Expedited benefits within seven days for households meeting the faster-service test.
What this includes
- Qualifying medical costs above $35 monthly can be deducted for an elderly or disabled member.
- If a reported income drop of at least $50 leads to a higher SNAP amount, the state’s change-processing rule generally requires the increase no later than the month after the change is reported. The office calculates whether the reported change actually increases the benefit.
If you decide to apply
- Ask the county MDHS office or social worker to go through a SNAP application with you.
- Bring current income, housing and utility costs, and medical expenses for any qualifying disabled household member.
- Describe available cash and income so the office can check expedited service.

What happens next
- SNAP normally has a 30-day processing period. A household meeting an expedited test must have benefits available within seven calendar days; the office still checks identity and the required interview.
- Benefits can arrive within seven days when the household has under $150 of income and $100 of cash this month, or when income plus cash is less than the rent and utilities. From October 2026 the line for three people is $2,960 a month and the most a family of three gets is $808.
Good to know
Your child's cancer alone does not count as a disability for SNAP; SSI does. If someone at home gets SSI, the first screen is skipped and medical costs over $35 a month come off.
Other details
- The food household and permitted deductions affect the award, so an income screen does not establish the monthly amount.

Official sources
“What are the benefits and drawbacks of SNAP for our household, and if it would help, could you help us apply and check the medical deductions?”
Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether grocery help could ease costs while we manage treatment.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply, report this month's income, and say if anyone in the home is disabled.
Your social worker
The hospital social worker can file with you and put the medical costs in writing.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The county office of the Mississippi Department of Human Services.
- Ask your social worker
- “Can we file for food benefits this week? Gross income is under the line, and I want the expedited test looked at.”
How to apply
First step: Apply through MDHS in the month the pay drops, and ask for the expedited test on the day you file.
- Apply in the month the pay actually drops, not the month after.
- Say out loud that a household member is disabled, if one is, so the net test and the medical deduction are used.
- Report the income drop in writing and keep a copy.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Apply through MDHS. Say on the day you apply if gross income is under $150 and you hold $100 or less: that is the expedited test.
What to gather
- This month's pay for everyone in the home
- Rent or mortgage and utility costs
- Medical costs for anyone in the home who is disabled
How long: Seven calendar days for an expedited case; otherwise the ordinary decision period.
What a yes looks like
A card with a monthly amount on it and a review date.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask whether the gross test or the net test was used, and whether the medical deduction was applied.
Watch out
- A household with a disabled member meets a net test, not the gross one, and can deduct medical costs over $35 a month.
- The table is replaced on October 1, 2026. The figures on this page run to September 30, 2026.
- Report a pay drop yourself. A drop of $50 a month or more must raise the benefit the following month.
Dates that change this
2026-10-01: The income table runs from October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026 and is replaced on October 1, 2026. The new figures were not published when this page was written.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Grocery money each month. The gross limit is $3,483 a month for four people and $2,888 for three, to September 30, 2026.
- $3,483/month — Gross monthly income limit, household of 4
- $2,888/month — Gross monthly income limit, household of 3
- $35/month — Medical costs above this can be deducted for an elderly or disabled member
- $7 — Expedited benefits are due within this many days
- $50/month — An income drop of at least this much must raise the benefit
Covers: Grocery money on a card each month
Legal protection: An income drop of $50 a month or more must raise the benefit no later than the next month · Ordinary road vehicles do not count against you
What it costs the family: Nothing to apply.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- Gross at or under 130 percent of poverty; a household with an elderly or disabled member meets a net test instead
- Resources
- Ordinary road vehicles are exempt; the resource figures for 2026 were not published
- Residency
- Mississippi
Decisions this site cannot make: MDHS county decision
Expect friction on: Reporting an income drop is on the family
The trap: A household that has someone on disability benefits does not have to pass the gross test at all; it meets a net test instead, after deductions. Medical costs over $35 a month can be deducted for that member. Nobody will mention this unless you do.
