What it is

A small monthly cash payment for families with very low income and limited savings.

Cash aid can help when income is very low. Mississippi checks income, savings and who belongs in the payment group. A parent needed at home for an ill child can request a work exemption with a doctor’s statement.

Eligibility rules
  • The household resource ceiling is $2,000, effective July 1, 2019.
  • For a parent and two children, income must be under $1,074 a month before deductions, and the most the family gets is $260 a month.
  • The time limit is 60 months with an adult in the payment group. A 24-month limit applies after unsatisfactory work participation.

  • A possible work-rule exemption for caring for an ill or incapacitated child.
What this includes
  • Monthly maximums are $200 for one person, $236 for two, $260 for three and $284 for four. These are ceilings, not guaranteed awards.
  • Exemption code JC covers a parent required to care for an ill or incapacitated child, supported by a doctor’s statement.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the county MDHS office or social worker to work through a TANF application with you.
  2. Have current household income, bank balances and a doctor’s description of your child’s care needs ready.
  3. Ask for the caregiver exemption from the work rules, with a letter from the oncologist describing your child's care.

What happens next
  • The usual TANF processing standard is 30 calendar days from receipt of a valid application. The county can identify missing documents, explain an allowed delay and give a written decision. Calling the packet incomplete does not by itself restart the clock.
Good to know

A child receiving SSI is left out of the TANF payment group. That can reduce the payment.

Other details
  • If the result is unexpected, the county can explain the income calculation, resource test and treatment of any SSI recipient.
