Missouri’s small monthly cash payment for families with children and very low income.

Temporary Assistance is small monthly cash when income is very low. Missouri runs three income tests, so passing the first one is not an approval. A one-time diversion payment is the alternative; ask about both in the same conversation.

Eligibility rules
  • The first gross-income test is 185% of the program’s standard of need, not the federal poverty guideline. Adjusted-income and grant-budget tests follow.
  • The ordinary resource limit is $1,000. A $5,000 limit can apply under Individual Employment Plan rules. FSD checks ownership and excluded property or funds.
  • An SSI recipient is left out of the assistance household count, along with their income and resources.
  • A nonparent relative can be considered for a child-only case. A natural or adoptive parent follows different rules. FSD checks the assistance unit and money belonging or available to the child rather than treating every caregiver’s whole salary as the child’s income.

What the help includes
  • For an assistance unit of three, the maximum monthly payment is $292 and the first gross-income screen is $1,565.10. For four, the corresponding amounts are $342 and $1,831.50. Two further budget tests and the rules about who belongs in the assistance unit still apply.
  • An adult generally has a 45-month cumulative limit, with exceptions.
  • Diversion is an alternative to monthly aid, available once in 12 months and five times over a lifetime. Catastrophic household illness can support the request.

After you apply
  • DSS describes a 10-day processing goal and up to 45 days for the first benefit. FSD checks the assistance unit and all income tests, excluding an SSI recipient. Medical evidence that you must stay home with a disabled family member can support a work-activity exemption.
Good to know

The most a family of three gets is $292 a month, and the first income test is about $1,565. A child on SSI is left out of the count, which changes both.

Other details
  • Diversion replaces monthly aid in the issue month and, depending on the amount, up to the next two months. Those diversion months do not count toward the ordinary time limit. The caseworker confirms the amount, covered months and catastrophic-illness evidence before you decide. Returning to monthly aid does not by itself establish repayment.
  • Current codified payment examples are $292 for three and $342 for four. These are longstanding program standards, not a new 2026 poverty-based increase. Diversion is limited to once in 12 months and five times in a lifetime.

  2. Ask about the diversion payment if what you need is one lump rather than monthly aid.
  3. Say if anyone at home gets SSI: they come out of the household count.
