Help paying for your children’s care
Help with child-care costs while parents work or attend approved training (Best Beginnings Scholarship).
What it is
Help with child-care costs while parents work or attend approved training (Best Beginnings Scholarship).
A sibling may need care during clinic days. Best Beginnings helps eligible working or studying families pay registered child-care costs. A special-health-needs rule can also matter for the child in treatment.
Eligibility rules
- Parents must meet work, approved training or education requirements.
- The July 1, 2025 scale lists monthly entry limits of $3,261 for two, $4,109 for three, $4,956 for four, $5,804 for five and $6,652 for six.
- The posted scale is dated July 1, 2025 and uses a sliding family copayment. Your scholarship office can confirm whether a newer table applies. Work or approved education still matters. The office must check whether hospital caregiving qualifies as an activity or exemption, your child's age, and any disability-related exception.
What you get
- Payment toward registered child care.
- Possible full-time care for a school-age child with verified special health needs.
What it covers
- The July 1, 2025 scale uses family copayments from 0.5% to 7% of income, with a $10 minimum. The office confirms your copayment and whether a newer scale applies.
- A February 2026 letter allows full-time care for a school-age child with verified special health needs.
- A family already on the scholarship can keep it until income passes $4,442 a month for three people. (the entry limit already appears in eligibility.items[1])
If you decide to apply
- Ask the regional child-care scholarship office about its application.
- Bring income proof, work or training details and the children’s information.

After you ask
- Approval identifies the scholarship, copayment and registered child-care business.
- A school-age child with verified special health needs can get full-time care rather than only after-school hours; the oncologist's letter is the evidence. Care can start on a 30-day temporary approval while the full decision is made.
Good to know
Being at the hospital does not count as work or study. A parent who has stopped work cannot start this new; ask the office whether an exception fits before you rely on it.
Other details
- The care arrangement must meet scholarship rules and your child’s needs.
Official sources
“Could a scholarship help with our children’s care? What would we pay and which activities count, and could you help with an application if it fits?”
Why I’m asking: I want to keep child care stable while our family manages treatment.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Apply and say which parent is working or studying.
Your social worker
The social worker can write the letter about the child’s verified special health needs.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- The state early childhood programme.
- Ask the agency
- “One of our children is in cancer treatment and I am still working. Does the child-care scholarship cover our other child, and does the special health needs exception apply?”
How to apply
First step: Apply on the state child-care scholarship page, and ask about the special health needs exception.
- Apply if a parent is still working or studying.
- Ask whether the full-time care exception for a child with verified special health needs applies to your family.

Where it starts: Apply through the state child-care scholarship page.
What to gather
- Proof of work or training
- This month’s income
- The children’s details
How long: No published decision clock; ask when you apply.
What a yes looks like
A scholarship with a co-payment and a registered provider named.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Usually income over the line, or no approved activity. Ask what would count.
Watch out
- Being at the hospital was not found to count as an approved activity, so ask before you rely on it.
- The posted fee scale is dated July 2025; ask whether a newer one applies.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth

- $4,109/month — Household of 3, maximum entry income
- $4,956/month — Household of 4, maximum entry income
- $5,804/month — Household of 5, maximum entry income

Covers: Payment toward registered child care · Full-time care for a school-age child with verified special health needs
What it costs the family: A sliding co-payment.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Income
- 185% of the poverty level on the posted scale
- Activity
- work, or approved training or education; hospital attendance alone was NOT FOUND as an approved activity
The trap: The approved activity is work, training or education. Whether being at the hospital counts was not established, so ask rather than assume. A February 2026 letter does allow full-time care for a school-age child who has verified special health needs, which can cover the child in treatment.
