Nebraska program

Respite money so a caregiver can rest

Help paying someone to take over care for a while so you can rest (Nebraska Lifespan Respite).

What it is

Help paying someone to take over care for a while so you can rest (Nebraska Lifespan Respite).

The subsidy contributes toward a caregiver break. Its income limit is higher than many benefit programs. The review also checks savings and whether another government program can provide respite.

Eligibility rules
  • The May 2026 table uses 312% of poverty: $8,580 a month for four people.
  • The resource limit is $50,000 for a household of two or more.
What you get
  • Up to $125 a month toward planned respite.
  • Up to $2,000 per eligibility period for exceptional circumstances, through a separate request.
What the help covers
  • The subsidy is a contribution and may not cover the full respite cost. Crisis funding has a separate application.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the Lifespan Respite team about eligibility and its application.
  2. Have household income, savings and any waiver service plan ready.

After you apply
  • Approval identifies the subsidy and respite arrangements.
  • Ask the coordinator which caregivers can be paid and how to send bills; the subsidy is paid back after approved respite, not in advance.
Good to know

The exclusion applies if you are eligible for other government respite, even if you are not receiving it.

Other details
  • A Medicaid waiver that provides respite may make this subsidy unavailable. The team needs to review both eligibility and actual services.
  • The respite team must confirm current benefit amounts, the dated May 2026 financial limits, caregiver eligibility and the exclusion for other government respite. The $2,000 exceptional amount is per eligibility period, not a recurring annual award.
Ask your social worker

“Could respite help us have a break from caregiving? How would the subsidy work with any other services and remaining costs, and could you help us decide whether to apply?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether there is practical, affordable help for a caregiver break.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Call, check the exclusion, and apply separately for exceptional circumstances if you need more.

Your social worker

The social worker can tell you whether your waiver plan already includes respite.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Lifespan Respite Subsidy Program.
Ask the agency
“I am caring for a child in cancer treatment at home and we get no respite from any other programme. Can we have the respite subsidy?”

How to apply

First step: Call 866-737-7483 and ask whether you are inside the exclusion.

  1. Call 866-737-7483 and ask about the subsidy and the exceptional-circumstances pot.
  2. Check first whether a waiver plan already includes respite.

What to gather

  • Household income
  • Whether any waiver plan already lists respite

How long: Not published. Ask when you call.

What a yes looks like

A monthly subsidy amount and a list of approved respite providers.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If the reason is the exclusion, ask which programme they think already provides it.

Watch out

  • It is excluded if another government programme already provides respite.
  • The crisis money needs its own separate application.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
