Nebraska program

Money for groceries each month (SNAP)

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card (SNAP).

What it is

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card (SNAP).

Nebraska's expanded route screens income at 165% of the poverty line and counts only cash savings, not the car. DHHS then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. It is judged on this month's income.

Eligibility rules
  • From October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, the higher gross screen is 165% of poverty: $3,665 a month for three people or $4,421 for four.
  • Most families use the higher line of $4,421 a month for four; a household with an ineligible member uses the lower line of $3,483.
  • The Expanded Resource Program caps liquid resources at $25,000 and has no non-liquid asset test. Outside it, the resource limits are $4,500 with an elderly or disabled member, or $3,000 otherwise.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery benefits with no charge to apply.
  • The higher screening route does not test non-liquid assets such as the car.
What the help covers
  • The medical deduction requires a household member who meets SNAP’s elderly or disability rules. A cancer diagnosis alone does not establish that category.
  • Through September 30, 2026, the maximum SNAP amount for three people is $785 a month. The actual amount depends on the household budget; the three-person standard deduction is $209. Eligible medical expenses above $35 may count for an elderly or qualifying disabled member. DHHS can explain how it calculates that deduction.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask DHHS about SNAP through iServe, or ask the hospital social worker to help.
  2. Have current income, who lives and eats together, savings information and medical bills ready.

After you apply
  • An approval gives the household a benefits card and monthly amount.
  • SNAP normally has a 30-day processing limit, or 7 days for households meeting the expedited tests. For a family already receiving SNAP, the social worker can help ask how a pay drop or qualifying expense affects the current amount and what proof DHHS needs. The effective month depends on the kind of change, when it is reported and required verification.
  • Expedited benefits can be available within seven days when monthly gross income is under $150 and liquid resources are no more than $100, or income plus liquid resources is below shelter and utility costs. Certain destitute migrant or seasonal-farmworker households also qualify. DHHS checks these conditions.
  • Reporting duties depend on your assigned reporting system. A gross monthly income drop of $50 or more that increases benefits generally affects the following month, subject to verification rules. DHHS can explain the effective month and any supplemental payment.
Good to know

Passing the screen is not the amount; rent and utilities set that.

Other details
  • The amounts shown here apply through September 30, 2026. SNAP’s annual table changes on October 1; the social worker or DHHS can confirm the table for the month being considered. These figures should not be used for a later period without that update.
Ask your social worker

“Could grocery benefits help our household during treatment? How would savings, medical expenses and changes in pay affect the amount, and could you help us decide whether to apply?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand whether food help would leave more of our budget for other bills.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply with this month’s income and report any drop within ten days.

Your social worker

The hospital social worker can file it with you.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
Nebraska DHHS.
Ask the agency
“Our income dropped this month because I am at the hospital with my child. Please use this month’s figure, and tell me whether we can be expedited.”

How to apply

First step: Apply at iserve.nebraska.gov or call 855-632-7633 this week.

  1. Apply on iServe with this month’s income, not last year’s.

What to gather

  • This month’s income
  • Who lives at home and eats together
  • Recent medical bills

How long: Nebraska’s current expedited timetable was not retrieved. Ask the worker whether your household can be served faster.

What a yes looks like

A card and a monthly amount.

What a no looks like, and the next move

If income was the reason, ask whether the broad-based route at the higher screen was used.

Watch out

  • Report a pay drop within ten days and the amount goes up the following month.
  • The car is not counted on the broad-based route; liquid savings over $25,000 are.

Dates that change this

2025-10-01: These figures run to September 30, 2026. The table rolls on October 1 and the next Nebraska one was not published when the research ran.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Grocery money each month. The broad-based gross screen is $4,421 a month for four people, and liquid savings are capped at $25,000.

  • $4,421/month — Household of 4, broad-based gross monthly screen
  • $3,665/month — Household of 3, broad-based gross monthly screen
  • $3,483/month — Household of 4, ordinary gross monthly limit
  • $25,000 — Liquid savings cap on the broad-based route

Covers: Money for groceries on a card each month

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
165% gross under the Expanded Resource Program; the ordinary screen is 130%
Other
liquid resources capped at $25,000 on the broad-based route, with no non-liquid asset test
Residency
Nebraska
Processing standard
unknown: the current expedited language was not retrieved

Decisions this site cannot make: DHHS gross and net income test

Expect friction on: Reporting a pay drop within ten days to get the higher amount

The trap: The broad-based route caps liquid savings at $25,000 and drops the non-liquid asset test, so the car is not the problem people expect.
