New Hampshire program

Money for groceries each month (SNAP)

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card [SNAP], through the same state portal as Medicaid.

What it is

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card [SNAP], through the same state portal as Medicaid.

SNAP helps leave more of your own money for rent and other bills. New Hampshire uses a broader income screen of 200% of poverty. Passing it does not set the payment; DHHS checks the food household, income and deductions.

Eligibility rules
  • The first screen is 200% of the poverty line for your food household, about $4,442 a month for three people (October 2025 to September 2026), with no savings test on this route. Rent, utilities and child care are then deducted before the amount is set.
What you get
  • A card loaded each month to buy eligible groceries.
What the help covers
  • Households qualifying through New Hampshire’s broader categorical route do not have an asset limit. Other SNAP routes have their own resource rules.
  • The office subtracts allowed deductions before calculating SNAP, including part of earnings and some child care and housing costs. Certain unreimbursed medical costs count for a qualifying older or disabled member. From October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, the maximum for three people is $785 a month, but your actual award can be lower; the next annual table must be checked for October.
If you decide to apply
  1. Choose food help on NH EASY, or ask the Bureau of Family Assistance for help with that part.
  2. Have ready: everyone’s current income, rent or mortgage costs, utilities and savings balances.

After you apply
  • A decision normally comes within 30 days, after an interview. If less than $150 is coming in this month and you have $100 or less in cash, or your income and cash together are less than your rent and utilities, the card can be loaded within seven days.
Good to know

If you already get SNAP, a pay drop raises the amount once the district office has proof. The case notice says which changes to report and by when.

Other details
  • A verified income change may change your SNAP amount. The office calculates the result, and your case notice explains which changes must be reported and the deadline for your household.
Ask your social worker

“Would grocery help make a difference for us, and what paperwork would it involve? Could you help us include SNAP and check whether we qualify for faster help?”

Why I’m asking: I want to keep enough money for food while treatment changes what we can earn.
