WIC provides specific foods and nutrition support. A younger sibling can qualify even if the child in treatment is older. The clinic also checks pregnancy, postpartum and breastfeeding eligibility.
Eligibility rules
- WIC’s income standard is 185% of poverty. The applicant’s qualifying Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation, and some specified family participation, can establish income eligibility. The clinic still checks the eligible age or pregnancy/postpartum category and nutrition needs; one older child’s Medicaid does not automatically establish income eligibility for everyone at home.
- The local administrator’s table lists monthly limits of $3,337 for two, $4,212 for three, $5,088 for four, $5,964 for five and $6,839 for six.
- Non-breastfeeding postpartum eligibility can continue through six months after a pregnancy ends. Breastfeeding eligibility can continue through the child’s first birthday, subject to the other program rules.

After you apply
- The WIC clinic checks the applicant’s category, residence, income and nutrition needs. Federal rules set faster processing for certain high-risk applicants, with other applicants generally processed within 20 days where the clinic has capacity. The clinic can explain the start of that clock, acceptable documents and any waiting list; a citizenship test should not be assumed.

This is a family question: a brother or sister under five may qualify even when the patient does not.
