Special Child Health Services can help eligible families buy medically necessary items insurance does not fully cover.

The county case manager is the starting point when insurance will not cover an item. This program has separate medical and registration rules. It is worth checking those before relying on a contribution.

Eligibility rules
  • Children must be under 22 and have lived in New Jersey for at least three months.
  • The financial screen is gross family income at or below 500% of poverty.
  • The program requires registration on the New Jersey Birth Defects Registry and uninsured or underinsured status.
  • The state fact sheet requires Birth Defects Registry registration, three months of New Jersey residence and age under 22. Your child must be uninsured or underinsured, with family income at or below 500% of poverty. The family contribution depends on income and family size and is no more than half the eligible cost. That is not a limit of half on what the program pays. The county case manager confirms the current income table and whether leukemia meets the medical and registry rules.
