New Jersey program
Get Covered New Jersey (the state marketplace)
New Jersey's marketplace sells health plans and checks help with the premium (Get Covered New Jersey).
What it is
New Jersey's marketplace sells health plans and checks help with the premium (Get Covered New Jersey).
Losing qualifying coverage can open a marketplace enrollment window. New Jersey also offers its own premium savings. The best comparison includes your cancer team, medicines and total costs, not just the premium.
Eligibility rules
- You must live in New Jersey and meet the marketplace's enrollment rules.
- The state guide gives 60 days for qualifying events. Medicaid or CHIP loss has additional federal timing rules, so the marketplace must confirm the applicable deadline.
- New Jersey Health Plan Savings reaches 600% of the federal poverty level.
What you get
- A chance to buy coverage outside the usual enrollment season after a qualifying event.
- State premium help for eligible households up to 600% of poverty.
What the help covers
- State premium help reduces the price of an eligible marketplace plan. It does not establish that every cancer clinic accepts that plan.
- State premium help reaches families up to 600% of the poverty line: about $13,300 a month for three ($159,900 a year). If Medicaid or CHIP ends, you have at least 60 days to choose a plan, and in some cases 90; ask the marketplace for your deadline in writing.
If you decide to apply
- You can ask a Get Covered New Jersey assister or hospital counselor to compare the available plans.
- For that discussion, it helps to have the coverage-ending notice, expected income and treatment team's names ready. You can ask for a check of the exact plan network.

After you ask
- Get Covered New Jersey decides the enrollment and savings application.
Good to know
Before current coverage ends, the marketplace can confirm the applicable enrollment window and the new plan’s start date. A change in income may also change assistance for a family already enrolled.
Other details
- An ending plan's notice identifies the coverage-loss date. That date matters when comparing replacement coverage.

“If our coverage changes, which marketplace plans would keep our child's cancer team? How do their costs compare with continuation coverage, and could you help us choose and enroll if needed?”
Why I’m asking: I want to avoid a gap in treatment coverage and understand the full cost of a replacement plan.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Report the change within 60 days, compare plans against the oncology group's network, and ask for the state savings.
Your social worker
The hospital financial counsellor can check which marketplace plans the oncology group takes.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- Get Covered New Jersey.
- Ask your social worker
- “Our coverage is ending. Which Get Covered New Jersey plans does this oncology group take, and can you help us file inside the 60 days?”
How to apply
First step: Go to nj.gov/getcoverednj or call 1-833-677-1010 and report the change.
- Report the change at nj.gov/getcoverednj within 60 days of the event, not 60 days from when you notice.
- Ask for New Jersey Health Plan Savings when you compare plans.
- Check the oncology group is in the plan before you pick it.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Apply at nj.gov/getcoverednj or call 1-833-677-1010.
What to gather
The diagnosis letter, the child’s insurance card, and the last two pay stubs cover most applications. The official page lists the rest.
How long: Coverage starts by the marketplace's own schedule once you enrol; the window to report is 60 days.
Clock: Report the change within 60 days of the event.
What a yes looks like
A plan choice with the state and federal help shown, and a start date.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Missing the 60 days closes the window until open enrolment. Ask whether NJ FamilyCare fits instead.
Watch out
- The 60 days run from the event, not from when you notice.
- New Jersey does not use HealthCare.gov. Go to nj.gov/getcoverednj.
- Check the oncology group is in the plan before you buy.
Dates that change this
2026-01-01: Some states allow 90 days after losing NJ FamilyCare. Whether New Jersey took that option was not published; work to the state's printed 60 days. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
2026-01-01: The extra federal premium tax credits ended December 31, 2025, so 2026 premiums are higher than in recent years.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
A 60-day window to buy after a qualifying change, with New Jersey's own premium help up to 600% of the poverty line.
- $60 — Published window to report a qualifying change
Covers: A marketplace plan for the parents, and for the child where the child is not on NJ FamilyCare
Legal protection: New Jersey Health Plan Savings: state help with the premium through 600% of the poverty line
What it costs the family: A monthly premium after the federal and state help. The state's own monthly table was not published.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Residency
- New Jersey
- Income
- New Jersey Health Plan Savings reaches 600% FPL; the state's monthly table was not published
- Special enrollment
- 60 days from the qualifying event, per the state's 2026 guide; loss of NJ FamilyCare is listed as a qualifying loss
The trap: The state's published instruction is to report the change within 60 days of the event, not 60 days from when you notice. Losing NJ FamilyCare counts as a qualifying change.
