NJ FamilyCare offers free health insurance for parents too.

What it is

NJ FamilyCare offers free health insurance for parents too.

Your child can qualify even when you do not. If family income falls, the same application can check the adults again. The state makes a separate eligibility decision for each person.

Eligibility rules
  • This adult category covers ages 19 through 64 in New Jersey.
  • From January 1, 2026, the effective income line is 138% of poverty after the five-point allowance. Monthly examples are $2,489 for two, $3,142 for three and $3,795 for four.
What you get
  • Full health coverage with no monthly premium for eligible parents.
  • A parent coverage check on the same family application.
What the help covers
  • The adult and child income tests differ even when the family uses one application.
If you decide to apply
  1. You can ask the hospital counselor to include the adults who want coverage on the NJ FamilyCare application.
  2. For that discussion, it helps to have the adults' information and current income ready. Explain a recent reduction in pay.

First step: Tick the adults on the same NJ FamilyCare application at njfamilycare.org.

  1. Add the adults to the same NJ FamilyCare application.
  2. If income is above the adult line, use Get Covered New Jersey instead.

What to gather

The diagnosis letter, the child’s insurance card, and the last two pay stubs cover most applications. The official page lists the rest.

Watch out

  • The adult line is much lower than the child line. A household can have covered children and uncovered parents.

Dates that change this

2027-01-01: From January 2027 New Jersey publishes new work rules for adult coverage, with an exemption for a parent caring for a child under 14 or for a person with a disability. Ask the county how it applies to you. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)
