New Jersey program

Help paying for groceries (NJ SNAP)

NJ SNAP puts money for groceries on a benefits card each month.

What it is

NJ SNAP puts money for groceries on a benefits card each month.

SNAP can help when treatment leaves less money for groceries. The county checks the household's income and allowed deductions to set the benefit. Families with very little income and cash may receive faster processing.

Eligibility rules
  • For October 2025 through September 2026, the gross monthly screen for one through eight people is $2,413, $3,261, $4,109, $4,957, $5,805, $6,653, $7,501 and $8,349. Add $848 per additional person. The county uses SNAP's household definition.
  • You must live in New Jersey.
  • The county checks SNAP's household and income rules. Qualifying categorical-eligibility cases have no ordinary asset test. Other cases may have resource limits and vehicle exclusions. A household savings estimate alone does not decide eligibility. A qualifying older or disabled member can change the gross-income test; cancer alone does not establish that status. Federal benefit and resource amounts change October 1, 2026.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery money on an electronic benefits card.
  • A seven-day route for households that meet the urgent-need test.
What the help covers
  • For households with a senior or qualifying disabled member, eligible monthly medical costs above $35 can be deductible.
  • The benefit amount depends on the county's calculation after allowed deductions.
  • The most a family of three can get is $808 a month from October 2026; the amount falls as net income rises. New Jersey tops up small awards to $95 a month.
If you decide to apply
  1. You can ask the county social service agency for a SNAP application, or use NJHelps.
  2. For that discussion, it helps to have current income, rent, utility and child-care costs ready. Tell the caseworker if you have very little money available.

After you ask
  • A decision normally takes up to 30 days. If under $150 is coming in this month and you have $100 or less in cash, or your income and cash together are less than your rent and utilities, benefits can be on the card within seven days.
  • An existing recipient can report an income change for a new benefit calculation.
Good to know

A lower paycheck can change an existing SNAP benefit. The county needs the changed income to recalculate it.

Other details
  • A gross-income screening result is not the final benefit calculation.
Ask your social worker

“Could SNAP help with groceries at our current income? Which expenses count, and could you help us apply or update our case if it would make a difference?”

Why I’m asking: I want the grocery budget to reflect the money we have available during treatment.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply with this month's income, and say if you have almost nothing right now.

Your social worker

The county decides, and must move faster where the expedited test is met.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The county social service agency.
Ask your social worker
“Can you help us apply for food benefits today, and tell the county we have very little cash right now?”

How to apply

First step: Apply at njhelps.org or through the county social service agency.

  1. Apply at njhelps.org this week.
  2. If income is under $150 a month and liquid savings under $100, say so: that is the seven-day route.
  3. If you already have benefits and pay has dropped, report it through MyNJHelps; the amount rises.

Where it starts: Apply at njhelps.org or through the county social service agency.

What to gather

The diagnosis letter, the child’s insurance card, and the last two pay stubs cover most applications. The official page lists the rest.

How long: Seven days where the expedited test is met; otherwise the ordinary county timetable.

What a yes looks like

A card with a monthly amount loaded onto it.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Over the gross screen. If someone in the house is a senior or has a disability, ask again: they can qualify above the chart.

Watch out

  • Already getting it and pay just dropped? Report it. The amount goes up.
  • The seven-day route needs income under $150 and liquid savings under $100.

Dates that change this

2026-10-01: The screening figures run October 2025 to September 2026 and roll on October 1, 2026. The replacement table was not published.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
