A New Mexico disability parking placard can allow accessible parking when the medical rules are met.
Closer parking can help when a child has difficulty walking during treatment. A diagnosis alone does not establish eligibility. The Motor Vehicle Division’s medical and application rules decide the request.
Eligibility rules
- A qualifying child can receive a placard for a certified mobility limitation, such as inability to walk 100 feet without resting, needing a walking aid or another person, portable oxygen, or the law’s specified lung, cardiac or severe stair-climbing limitation. Cancer treatment alone is not the test. A physician, physician assistant, advanced practice registered nurse or certified nurse-midwife may certify within their scope of practice using the current MVD process.

What this includes
- The statute allows up to two personal placards without an additional fee. A permanent placard lasts four years; a temporary one can last up to one year. It may be used only when the eligible person is being transported, including a child riding with a caregiver.

After you apply
- MVD’s current placard instructions explain how to submit the application and medical certification and which identity records are needed. The social worker can help check the current form and follow up on processing. A permanent placard still needs renewal when it expires, but the statute does not require a new medical certification after permanent disability has already been approved.
