What it is

LIHEAP makes a yearly payment toward energy costs for eligible New Mexico households.

LIHEAP can help with a household energy bill. It uses the same application portal as food assistance. Qualifying for the current heating season also matters for winter shutoff protection.

Eligibility rules
  • New Mexico residency is required.
  • The line is 150% of the poverty line, judged on the last 30 days of income: about $3,415 a month for three. Recent emergency costs, including medical bills, can help if income is a little above it.

  • A payment toward the household energy bill, with no application charge.
What this includes
  • The payment depends on household points, the current award schedule and available funds. The office confirms the household amount. Crisis help has a separate energy-emergency test.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask the social worker about adding energy help to the YES New Mexico application.
  2. Have household income and the energy bill ready. A current-season eligibility decision can also be shared with the utility.

After you apply
  • A qualifying decision produces a utility payment and current-season eligibility record. The office confirms the applicable household-size table and remaining funds.
  • The office explains the ordinary decision date and urgent process. Records include household identity, residence, recent income and the energy account or fuel cost. Shutoff notices and qualifying emergency-expense records can matter too.
  • Published crisis standards are 48 hours, or 18 hours when life-threatening. The office confirms urgent handling over weekends and holidays. Those response standards do not guarantee a particular payment.
Good to know

The heating program year changes in October. Winter shutoff protection has additional arrears or payment-agreement rules.

Other details
  • Winter protection runs November 15 through March 15 for qualifying households with no arrears or a maintained payment agreement.
  • FY2026 runs October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026. FY2027 runs October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027. The office confirms each year’s household-size table, point value and available funds.
