What it is

SNAP puts grocery money on a card each month for eligible households.

SNAP can help when treatment changes what is coming in. The first screen is 200% of the poverty line for your household; rent, utilities and child care then set the amount.

Eligibility rules
  • You must live in New Mexico. The categorical route requires gross income below 200% of poverty and receipt of a non-cash assistance service.
  • Savings are not verified on that categorical route. Every vehicle’s full value is excluded.
  • The office confirms its current income table and which noncash assistance service qualifies for the broader route.
  • If less than $150 is coming in this month and you have $100 or less in cash, or your income and cash together are less than your rent and utilities, benefits can be on the card within seven days.

  • A household meeting emergency rules can receive service within seven days.
What this includes
  • The monthly benefit depends on household size, countable income and allowed deductions. A pay drop of at least $50 or an added household member can trigger a faster increase under the change-reporting rules, but verification, issuance dates and the maximum benefit still matter. The office can give the amount from the table in force for the benefit month.
  • If pay drops by $50 or more, tell the office; the next month's amount can go up once the change is verified.

  1. Ask the social worker about the SNAP application through YES New Mexico.
  2. Have current income, housing costs and savings information ready. If food or money is running out, explain that during the interview.

After you apply
  • The emergency service standard is seven days for households that qualify. The decision notice gives the monthly amount.
  • Ordinary processing is generally within 30 days, or seven days for a qualifying expedited household. The office arranges the required interview and explains verification. A household can report a pay drop to ask for a benefit review; the notice explains which changes must be reported and by when. Faster processing does not guarantee the maximum grocery benefit.
Good to know

If you already get SNAP, a pay drop of fifty dollars a month or more raises the amount within ten days of reporting it with proof.
