What it is

New York's Child Care Assistance Program can help pay for approved care while your family manages work and treatment.

A sibling still needs care when treatment changes your schedule. Your district pays part of the cost while a parent works or studies and income is under the line. Being at the hospital is not on the list on its own, so ask the district before you rely on it.

Eligibility rules
  • The applicable income screen is generally 85% of state median income. Monroe County publishes a monthly example of $8,154.48 for three people. Your district confirms the current table period, household size and income calculation; this is not a promise of a funded place.
  • The ordinary guarantee for specified public-assistance working families is for children under 13. Older-child disability categories need a district review. Eligible activities and local funding also matter.

  • A treatment-related scheduling problem does not by itself establish an eligible child-care activity.
  • The district checks your child’s age, income, reason for care and available funding. Work, education and training can qualify. Some categories recognize parental incapacity or required family duties away from home. Caring for a sick child is not automatically included or excluded. Existing eligibility generally lasts at least 12 months. The family fee is capped at 1% of income above poverty, not all income. Your district can distinguish a new request from help continuing during temporary leave and confirm processing time. Certain funding-based terminations require 30 days’ notice.
