New York program

SNAP food benefits (New York)

SNAP adds money to an EBT card each month to help your family buy groceries.

What it is

SNAP adds money to an EBT card each month to help your family buy groceries.

A drop in pay can open grocery help. New York's first screen rises when someone at home has earnings, gets SSI or pays for dependent care. After that, rent, utilities and care costs come off before the amount is set.

Eligibility rules
  • Through September 30, 2026, the monthly gross screens for four are $3,483 without earnings, $4,019 with earnings, and $5,358 with a qualifying older or disabled member or dependent-care expenses.
  • Most households have no resource test. Owning a car does not disqualify a household.
  • A diagnosis alone does not establish SNAP's disability category.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery help based on your household's income and eligible expenses.
  • Grocery benefits on an EBT card.
  • Benefits within seven days for households meeting an expedited-processing test.
What the help includes
  • The maximum for four people is $994 monthly through September 30, 2026. The agency calculates your actual amount.
  • Eligible medical expenses above $35 monthly can be deducted for a qualifying disabled member or someone age 60 or older.
  • One expedited route requires income below $150 and liquid resources of $100 or less. Another compares income plus resources with rent and utilities.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your local DSS, or HRA in New York City, to review the SNAP application with you.
  2. Have current income, housing and utility bills, child-care costs and any disability-benefit notice ready.
  3. If you already receive SNAP, ask about reporting the income change rather than starting a second application.

After you ask
  • The normal processing period is up to 30 days. Expedited cases have a seven-day standard.
  • LDSS-3151 is the change-report form for an existing SNAP case.
Good to know

The maximum is not what most families get; rent and utilities set the amount.

Other details
  • The current figures cover October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026.
  • If your pay drops by $50 or more a month, report it with proof; the new amount should start the following month.
Ask your social worker

“Would our current income and expenses qualify us for grocery help, and what amount might the agency calculate? If it would help, could you assist with an application or a change to our existing case?”

Why I’m asking: We want to keep groceries covered when pay falls or treatment adds household costs.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

File, do the interview, report income and expenses, and ask for fast-track processing when you file.

Your social worker

The social worker helps protect the filing date and documents the child's disability if it opens the 200% limit.

The care team

Writes the letter that the child needs the parent's daily care, if a work-rule question comes up.

Who decides
The local Department of Social Services.
Ask your social worker
“Can you help us file for SNAP today and ask for fast-track processing? Which income limit applies to us: earnings, a disabled member, or dependent care?”

How to apply

First step: Apply at myBenefits.ny.gov or the local Department of Social Services. Ask for fast-track (expedited) processing when you file.

  1. Apply and ask for expedited processing if money is nearly gone.
  2. Tell the district which tier applies (earnings; a disabled member; dependent care).
  3. Report a pay drop with the change-report form.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply at myBenefits.ny.gov or the local DSS; ask for expedited processing at filing.

What to gather

  • This month's income for everyone in the home
  • Rent or mortgage and utility bills
  • Child care costs
  • Proof of a member's SSI or disability, if any
  • The change-report form (LDSS-3151), if you already get SNAP and pay dropped

How long: Fast-track benefits within seven days if money is nearly gone; otherwise up to 30 days.

What a yes looks like

A notice with the monthly amount and an EBT card.

What a no looks like, and the next move

"Over the gross limit": check which income limit the district used and ask for a fair hearing by the notice date.

Watch out

  • Three income limits, not one: 130% of the poverty line with no earnings, 150% with earnings, 200% only with a disabled or elderly member or dependent-care costs. Say which applies.
  • A pay drop changes the existing SNAP case rather than requiring another application. A reported monthly income drop of at least $50 generally must be reflected no later than the following month when required proof is supplied on time; the district confirms the report, proof and payment dates.
  • Tables roll October 1, 2026 and the new table was not yet published. Ask for fast-track processing when you file if money is nearly gone.

Dates that change this

2026-10-01: The FY2026 tables run October 1, 2025 to September 30, 2026; the October 2026 table was not published on 2026-09-08. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 9, 2026.

What it is worth

Up to $994 a month for four (federal maximum, FY2026). New York income limits for four: $3,483 (no earnings), $4,019 (earnings), $5,358 (disabled or elderly member, or dependent care). Fast-track benefits within seven days.

  • $3,483/month — Gross income line, 4 people, no earned income and no elderly or disabled member (130%)
  • $4,019/month — Gross income line, 4 people, earned income (150%)
  • $5,358/month — Gross income line, 4 people, elderly or disabled member or dependent-care expenses (200%)
  • $7 — Expedited benefit: days to the first issuance
  • $35/month — Medical expenses deductible above this monthly amount (disabled or 60+ member)

Covers: EBT food benefit

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Gross income tiers
130% (no earnings, no elderly or disabled member); 150% (earnings); 200% (elderly or disabled member, or dependent-care expenses); tables effective 2025-10-01 to 2026-09-30
Resources
most households have no savings or resource test
Vehicle
owning a car does not disqualify
Medical deduction
expenses over $35 a month for a disabled or 60+ member; no flat standard medical deduction found
Expedited
within seven days; one route is income under $150 and liquid resources of $100 or less; another compares income plus resources with rent and utilities
Reporting
Use the existing SNAP case’s change-report route for a pay drop. Under 7 CFR 273.12, a reported monthly income drop of at least $50 generally affects the next month when verification is timely; a supplemental payment may be required.

Decisions this site cannot make: District SNAP eligibility

Expect friction on: Interview · Expedited only on request

The trap: The limit depends on who is in the home: with earnings it is 150% of the poverty line, and 200% applies only with a disabled or elderly member (a child on SSI counts) or dependent-care costs. Report a pay drop as a change, not a new application.
