Medicaid covers rides to treatment. The county route can also repay an escort’s meals and lodging.

What it is

Medicaid covers rides to treatment. The county route can also repay an escort’s meals and lodging.

A child’s Medicaid plan arranges rides to covered visits. Children in Medicaid Direct use county social services instead. County travel support can also help a parent staying with an inpatient child when the trip is medically necessary.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child must have Medicaid and a covered appointment. Routine notice is two days for a health plan and four for Medicaid Direct.
  • Urgent pickups, including hospital discharge and collecting medicines, require no advance notice.
  • Under Medicaid Direct, children under 18 generally need an attendant unless emancipated. A second accompanying parent needs documented necessity. Breakfast generally requires departure before 6 a.m.; dinner requires return after 8 p.m. Lunch generally accompanies an overnight stay.

  • An adult can accompany the child; children under 18 need an adult.
  • Approved meals and actual lodging through Medicaid Direct, within the county travel limits.
What the help covers
  • Through Medicaid Direct the county can pay back about $10 for breakfast, $14 for lunch and $24 for dinner, plus a hotel up to about $94 a night in state (a little more outside North Carolina). Each meal has to qualify, so ask before booking. Health plans have their own rates.
  • If your child is admitted far from home, a parent's hotel and meals can be covered when the doctor writes that you need to be there, for example to learn the care. Ask the social worker for the county travel form before you pay.

  1. Ask the health plan’s ride line, or county social services for Medicaid Direct, to arrange the trip.
  2. Have the Medicaid card, appointment details and escort needs ready.
  3. For county meals or lodging, ask about the travel form and keep receipts.
