What it is

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card, called Food and Nutrition Services in North Carolina.

Food and Nutrition Services helps when earnings fall during treatment. SNAP counts everyone who buys and prepares food together, checks this month's income against the screen, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount.

Eligibility rules
  • The expanded categorical screen is 200% of poverty. Through September 30, 2026, monthly amounts include $4,442 for three, $5,360 for four and $6,276 for five.
  • Urgent tests include gross income below $150 with liquid savings of $100 or less, or income plus liquid savings below rent and utilities.
  • Outside categorical eligibility, countable resources are generally limited to $3,000, or $4,500 when a household member is at least 60 or meets the program’s disability definition. The county checks which resources count.
  • Most families are screened at 200% of poverty ($4,442 a month for three, $5,360 for four, $6,276 for five); a household with an ineligible member uses the lower 130% line. A child on SSI counts as disabled for SNAP, which opens the medical-expense deduction.
  • A separate expedited test covers specified destitute migrant or seasonal-farmworker households with liquid resources of $100 or less. The county checks which urgent test fits.

  • A household with an older or qualifying disabled member can deduct medical costs above $35 monthly. Deductions affect the payment.

  3. Explain if money for food is almost gone so the county can check the seven-day route.

If you decide to apply
  • The usual processing period is 30 days. For households meeting the urgent financial tests, North Carolina aims to approve by the fourth calendar day so benefits can be available by the seventh. The social worker can help the county understand an urgent food shortage or a recent income drop.
Good to know

Most categorically eligible households do not face a savings test. A pay drop can change an existing benefit.

Other details
  • The income amounts shown here apply only through September 30, 2026. From October 1, the county uses its new annual table. A household with a member who meets the program’s elderly or disability rules may have different income tests and additional medical-expense deductions; the social worker can help identify those costs.

The trap: Savings normally do not matter here: the manual says categorically eligible units do not have to meet the resource limits, and vehicles are excluded anyway. If you are already getting it and pay has dropped, report the drop and the amount goes up from the month after you report it.
