North Dakota program

Grocery money each month (SNAP)

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card for households that meet North Dakota’s SNAP rules.

What it is

Monthly grocery money on a benefits card for households that meet North Dakota’s SNAP rules.

A smaller paycheck can make grocery help available or change an existing benefit. The zone office checks household income and allowable expenses before setting the amount. Very low income or high shelter costs can qualify a household for faster help.

Eligibility rules
  • Through September 30, 2026, the monthly gross screen is $5,360 for four, $4,442 for three and $3,526 for two.
  • Categorically eligible households have no resource test.
  • Expedited screening includes gross income under $150 and liquid resources at most $100; income plus liquid resources below shelter costs and the applicable utility allowance; or a qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal-farmworker household with liquid resources at most $100. Those resources matter even without an ordinary SNAP asset test.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery benefits at no charge.
  • Benefits within seven days when the expedited test is met.
What the help includes
  • The office calculates the monthly allotment after its income and deduction checks.
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, the maximum three-person allotment is $785. Outside a categorical route, the ordinary three-person gross and net limits are $2,888 and $2,221. Qualifying elderly or disabled households have a gross-test exception; a leukemia diagnosis alone does not establish that SNAP category.
If you decide to apply
  1. Discuss SNAP with your hospital social worker. If you decide to pursue it, they can help with the next step.
  2. Have current pay, rent or mortgage, utility costs and household details ready.

After you ask
  • The usual standard is 30 days. Expedited benefits are due within seven days, with the state manual targeting the third calendar day.
  • A reported change in an existing case has a 10-day action standard.
  • Existing recipients can have a change reviewed without a duplicate application. A pay drop does not guarantee an increase.
  • If you decide to proceed, ask the human service zone about SNAP through the Self-Service Portal.
Good to know

Passing the screen is not the amount; rent and utilities set that. If you already get SNAP, a reported pay drop raises it within 10 days.

Other details
  • From October 2026 the line for three people is $4,554 a month and the most a family of three gets is $808. (one effective figure per period; drop the ordinary gross and net pair)
Ask your social worker

“Could grocery help fit our current income, and would any rules make applying difficult? Could you help us check the amount and faster processing if we decide to apply?”

Why I’m asking: I want our food budget to reflect what is coming in now.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

File and report this month’s income honestly, including a drop.

Your social worker

The zone worker screens for the expedited route.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
Your human service zone office.
Ask the agency
“Our income has dropped this month. Can you check whether we meet the expedited SNAP test?”

How to apply

First step: Apply on the Self-Service Portal, on the same day as the Medicaid application.

  1. Apply on the same portal as Medicaid.
  2. Say plainly if there is almost nothing coming in this month; that is the seven-day route.
  3. If you already get SNAP and pay has dropped, report it within days.

Where it starts: Apply on the Self-Service Portal or through your human service zone.

What to gather

  • This month’s pay stubs
  • Rent or mortgage and utility costs
  • Who lives in the household

How long: Normally 30 days. The ND manual calls for expedited processing by the third calendar day, within the federal seven-day benefit deadline, for qualifying cases.

What a yes looks like

A card and a monthly amount.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Usually income. If a paycheck has since stopped, reapply on the new figure.

Watch out

  • When income changes, the agency recalculates an existing benefit; an increase is not automatic.
  • The limits change on October 1, 2026.

Dates that change this

2026-10-01: New limits start on October 1, 2026: $3,608 a month for two, $4,554 for three, $5,500 for four and $6,448 for five. The six-person figure in the same release does not sit consistently with its own base row, so ask the zone office rather than relying on a printed six-person number.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Grocery money on a card for a household under $5,360 a month for four, with no savings test.

  • $5,360/month — Gross monthly income ceiling, household of 4 (200% of poverty), through September 30, 2026
  • $4,442/month — Gross monthly income ceiling, household of 3
  • $3,526/month — Gross monthly income ceiling, household of 2
  • $7 — Days to benefits when the expedited test is met

Covers: Monthly grocery money on a card

Legal protection: No resource test for categorically eligible households

What it costs the family: Nothing.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
200% of poverty gross, expanded categorical eligibility
Assets
no resource test for categorically eligible households
Expedited
under $150 gross monthly income with $100 or less in liquid resources, or income plus liquid resources under the rent or mortgage plus the utility allowance

The trap: If you already get SNAP and your pay drops, report it: the amount goes up. The state has to act on a reported change within 10 days.
