What it is

WIC is for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents, each checked separately. Income at or under 185% of the poverty line qualifies, and taking part in Ohio Medicaid, Ohio Food Assistance or TANF can simplify the income check; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs at an appointment.
Eligibility rules
- WIC serves children younger than five and eligible pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding participants. Each person has a separate category and nutrition review.
- Income at or under 185% of the poverty level ($50,542 a year or $4,212 a month for 3, effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), or current participation in Medicaid, TANF or Ohio Food Assistance.
- Ohio WIC checks Ohio residence, the eligible person's category, income and nutrition needs. The social worker can help the clinic explain whose documents are needed, including its citizenship and immigration-document rules. Medicaid's rules do not settle WIC eligibility. Current Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation can establish WIC income eligibility, while the other WIC tests still apply.

What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
WIC can review your younger child using your income now; qualifying benefit participation can simplify the income check, but you do not need to wait for another program’s decision.
Other details
- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
