What it is

OHP travel help gets your child to covered care [non-emergency medical transportation].

Repeated treatment trips can cost a lot even when medical care is covered. OHP travel help can include a ride, mileage or help with a longer stay. The ride service decides the arrangements before the appointment.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child must have the applicable OHP transportation benefit. The CCO meal rule generally needs at least four hours of round-trip travel, excluding clinic and waiting time, and the relevant meal windows. Documented medical exceptions may apply.
What you get
  • Free rides to covered appointments and the pharmacy.
  • Approved mileage reimbursement when you drive.
  • Meal and lodging help on qualifying trips, including one medically necessary attendant.
What the help includes
  • Meals can be claimed when the trip is four hours or more of driving and runs through a mealtime: leaving before 6 a.m., covering 11:30 to 1:30, or back after 6:30 p.m.
  • The CCO rule allows approved lodging for travel starting before 5 a.m. or ending after 9 p.m., or documented medical need. The broker confirms the current rate and approval before you rely on reimbursement.
  • One approved necessary attendant can receive qualifying meal or lodging support. This may be a parent accompanying a minor who cannot travel alone.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask your child's OHP plan which ride service handles your area.
  2. Give that service your member number, appointment dates and clinic address, and ask what costs need advance approval.

After you ask
  • The ride service confirms booked trips and the mileage, meal or lodging costs it has approved.
  • Send mileage and meal claims within 45 days of the trip; payment follows within about two weeks once the appointment is verified.
Good to know

Booking two business days ahead can help. A shorter-notice medically necessary trip needs discussion with the ride service.

How to apply

First step: If travel help would be useful, the social worker can identify your current plan’s broker. Health Share’s Ride to Care is 855-321-4899; another CCO or Open Card may use a different contact.

  1. Call the ride service and register this week, before the first appointment.
  2. Ask for standing rides for the whole treatment block rather than booking one at a time.
  3. If the hospital is far, ask about mileage, meals and a hotel, and say a parent will travel with the child.

How long: The current broker confirms booking lead time. Under the July 1, 2026 CCO rule, claims are generally due within 45 days of travel and payment within 14 days after required verification.

Usually a timing problem, not an eligibility one. Ask what notice they need and book the next block.

Watch out

  • You have to ask before the appointment; ask two business days ahead where you can.
  • The statewide list of county ride services was last updated in 2023. Ask your plan who the ride service is now.
  • Book the whole block of appointments at once rather than one at a time.

2023-07-01: The statewide county-by-county ride-service list was last published July 1, 2023. Ride to Care on 855-321-4899 was confirmed current for the Portland area in September 2026; for other counties, ask your coordinated care organization who the ride service is now. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

What it is worth

OHP covers qualifying rides and may reimburse mileage, meals, lodging and an approved attendant. The current CCO or Open Card broker confirms the local rates and their effective date before travel; the older Portland dollar figures are not a verified current schedule.

The trap: Discuss advance arrangements with the current plan’s broker. Claims generally must arrive within 45 days of travel; the rule allows correction of incomplete timely claims. A missed local booking lead time is not by itself a universal statement that no reimbursement is possible.
