WIC is for children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents, each checked separately. Income at or under 185% of the poverty line qualifies, and taking part in Oregon Health Plan, SNAP or TANF can simplify the income check; an application alone does not. The clinic also checks nutrition needs at an appointment.
Eligibility rules
- Oregon WIC’s guideline effective July 1, 2026 is $4,212 a month for three people, or 185% of poverty. Medicaid/OHP, SNAP or TANF participation establishes the income part. An eligible pregnancy or postpartum category, or a child under five, Oregon residence and a nutrition assessment are still required. A younger sibling may qualify even when the child receiving treatment is older.
- Income at or under 185% of the poverty level ($50,542 a year or $4,212 a month for 3, effective July 1, 2026 to June 30, 2027), or current participation in Medicaid, TANF or SNAP.
- Oregon WIC does not require U.S. citizenship, permanent residence or proof of lawful immigration status. The clinic checks Oregon residence, identity and household income or qualifying program enrollment, along with age or pregnancy status and nutritional risk. Examples include a child’s birth or immunization record or OHP identification, an addressed bill or other residence proof, and income records or proof of OHP, SNAP or TANF. A Social Security card is one possible identity document, not the only one. When ordinary documents are unavailable, the clinic has an alternate-proof process; ask the social worker to help arrange that conversation.

What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
WIC can review your younger child using your income now; qualifying benefit participation can simplify the income check, but you do not need to wait for another program’s decision.
Other details
- An older child’s diagnosis does not create WIC eligibility.
