Help keeping child care for a sibling
Child Care Works can help pay for a sibling's child care. Existing help may continue when treatment disrupts a parent's usual work activity.
What it is
Child Care Works can help pay for a sibling's child care. Existing help may continue when treatment disrupts a parent's usual work activity.
Keeping a sibling's child care helps when treatment changes the family routine. A family already in Child Care Works keeps it through the 12-month period; a new family needs a parent working or studying and income under the line. The Early Learning Resource Center handles both.
Eligibility rules
- To start new help, income must be under about $4,553 a month for three people or $5,500 for four. A family already getting help is judged differently.
- Existing eligibility can continue through the current 12-month period after an activity break.
- For a new case, the usual activity test is at least 20 hours of work a week, or at least ten hours of work plus approved education or training totaling 20 hours; exceptions need an ELRC check. Hospital caregiving alone does not meet that new-entry test. A family already receiving Child Care Works can have different protection through the rest of its 12-month eligibility period after leave or job loss.
- The child generally must be under 13, or through age 18 with a qualifying disability. The ELRC checks age, care needs and the applicable activity rules.

What the help includes
- Assistance pays toward approved child care. The Early Learning Resource Center checks the care arrangement and available funding.
- You pay one weekly family copayment and the state pays the rest up to its rate; a provider that charges more can bill you the difference. New families may face a waiting list.
If you decide to apply
- Ask your Early Learning Resource Center to review any work leave or activity break and your current child-care notice.
- Bring the eligibility notice, household income records and details of the change in work or care.
- Ask what care would remain covered and what family payment would be due before changing arrangements.

After you ask
- Ask the Early Learning Resource Center for written confirmation of the covered care, family payment and end of the eligibility period.
- A decision is due within 30 days of a signed application. If help is cut, you have 30 days to appeal, but only ten days to ask in writing to keep the subsidy running during the appeal.
Good to know
That protection keeps help you already have. Being at the hospital does not count as work for a new case.
Other details
- A current recipient's notice helps identify whether this is a mid-period change or a new application.
- The full household and activity tests still apply. A sibling being present does not establish that a particular care arrangement qualifies.
