What it is

A disability parking placard can let your child use accessible parking as a passenger.

A shorter walk can make clinic visits easier when a child's condition limits mobility. A physician must assess and certify eligibility. Frequent appointments alone do not establish a qualifying condition.

Eligibility rules
  • A physician must certify the qualifying condition. Your child can use the placard as a passenger.

  • A temporary or longer-term placard according to the certified condition and DMV’s decision.

  • The DMV disability office confirms the fee for the type of placard or renewal your child needs.
  • The DMV form describes temporary disability as two to 12 months. Your social worker or physician can check the initial fee and preliminary or renewal terms with DMV at 401-462-4368. DMV must confirm any free 21-day or fixed 60-day option before your family relies on it.

The trap: The form has to be sent within 30 days of the doctor signing it, and it takes two to four weeks to come back. The doctor's free 21-day preliminary placard is what covers the gap, so ask for both at once.
