What it is

Rhode Island Medicaid can cover your own doctor visits, hospital care and medicines without a monthly premium.

Your health coverage matters while you are caring for your child. A drop in pay can bring you under the adult Medicaid line. A child qualifying for RIte Care does not mean the adults qualify too.

Eligibility rules
  • The ordinary expansion route is for Rhode Island residents ages 19–64 who meet its other requirements, including its Medicare restriction. Parent/caretaker, aged and disability-based coverage are separate routes.
  • The standard is 133% of poverty, or 138% after the five-percentage-point disregard.
  • The state’s chart revised February 16, 2026 lists monthly adult screens including the disregard of $2,489 for two people, $3,142 for three and $3,795 for four. The financial counselor can confirm the table and adult coverage category in use.
  • The current monthly income and household calculation decides eligibility. A yearly figure divided by 12 is only an estimate.
  • Adults have their own citizenship and immigration rules; a child’s Cover All Kids eligibility does not settle them. Rhode Island announces changes for some noncitizen adults from October 1, 2026, with child-under-19 and pregnancy/postpartum exceptions. Ask the financial counselor to check the adult’s exact category and date, especially near age 65 or with Medicare.

  • Doctor visits, hospital care and prescription medicines for the parent.
What this covers
  • Coverage is for the adult’s own medical care. A parent’s application does not replace the child’s coverage review.

  1. Ask the hospital financial counselor to include the adults on the HealthyRhode application.
  2. Bring current income and existing insurance details, including any expected coverage end date.

After you ask
  • The eligibility notice separates each household member’s decision.
  • The ordinary adult Medicaid rule gives the state 30 days after a completed application is received. Earlier bills have separate rules: Rhode Island waives retroactive coverage for many ordinary adult cases, with exceptions for certain other categories. Ask the financial counselor to check your category and each bill’s service date; a January 2027 federal change does not by itself guarantee an earlier month of Rhode Island adult coverage.
Good to know

The child and adult limits differ sharply. One application can lead to Medicaid for the child and marketplace coverage for a parent.

Watch out

  • The adult line is far lower than the child's, so a covered child does not mean covered parents.
  • The paper application still prints an old 136% figure that the rule withdrew.
