Rhode Island program

Grocery money each month (SNAP)

SNAP puts money on an EBT card for groceries, leaving more of your money for other bills.

What it is

SNAP puts money on an EBT card for groceries, leaving more of your money for other bills.

Groceries get harder to cover when treatment cuts into work. SNAP checks this month's income against the screen, then takes rent, utilities and child care off before setting the amount. A family with almost nothing coming in gets a decision in seven days.

Eligibility rules
  • The usual gross-income screen is 185% of poverty. It is 200% for a household with a member who meets SNAP elderly or disability rules.
  • Through September 30, 2026, the 185% monthly limits are $3,262 for two, $4,109 for three and $4,958 for four people.
  • SNAP checks who buys and prepares food together, with mandatory grouping for spouses and most children under 22 living with a parent. Immigration eligibility is checked for each person receiving benefits under Rhode Island’s rules changed February 17, 2026; other household members’ income can still matter. The 200% screen and medical deduction require SNAP’s specific elderly or disability category, not just a cancer diagnosis. The social worker can help DHS check the household and benefit documents.
  • A household above the 200% screening amount may still qualify through the separate elderly or disability calculation. DHS checks income after deductions and the resource rules. The qualifying benefit or status must be confirmed; a cancer diagnosis alone is not enough.
What you get
  • Monthly grocery benefits on an EBT card.
  • A decision within seven calendar days for households that meet the urgent-need rules.
  • No savings test under the categorical eligibility route.
What this covers
  • If someone in the household gets SSI or another disability benefit, medical costs over $35 a month can be taken off income before the benefit is worked out.
  • The final amount depends on the program calculation, including allowed deductions.
If you decide to apply
  1. Talk through the program calculation and obligations with the social worker. If you decide to pursue it, they can help with the form.
  2. Have current income and household-expense records ready, and describe how much money is available for food.
  3. If you already receive SNAP, report changed income to DHS so it can recalculate your benefit.

What happens next
  • DHS normally has 30 days to process SNAP. Seven-calendar-day service applies when gross monthly income is under $150 and liquid resources are at most $100; when a qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household has at most $100 in liquid resources; or when income plus liquid resources is less than rent or mortgage plus utilities. The social worker can help ask DHS which test fits and what proof is needed.
  • Reporting lower pay allows DHS to reconsider the benefit amount.
Good to know

Your child's cancer alone does not count as a disability for SNAP; a disability benefit such as SSI does.

Other details
  • These income figures run through September 30, 2026. From October 1, ask DHS or the social worker to confirm the new SNAP table rather than using the old amounts. The $183 medical deduction has its own rule and should be checked separately from the annual income-table change.
Ask your social worker

“Could SNAP ease our grocery costs, and which expenses would change the amount? Would you recommend applying or updating an existing case, and help us with that?”

Why I’m asking: I want our food budget assessed using what is coming in during treatment.
