Rhode Island program
Pay while you care for your child (Temporary Caregiver Insurance)
Rhode Island pays part of your wages during eligible leave to care for a seriously ill child.
What it is
Rhode Island pays part of your wages during eligible leave to care for a seriously ill child.
Temporary Caregiver Insurance can replace part of a paycheck while you care for your child. It also provides job restoration and continued health benefits. Covered employment and the length of your absence matter.
Eligibility rules
- Eight weeks applies from January 1, 2026. Covered employment can include an employer with just one worker.
- Public employees are covered only where the employer elected into the program.
- The filing window is 30 days from the start of leave. There is no unpaid waiting week, but seven consecutive days off are required.
- You need about $19,200 in wages over the past year or so, or a lower-wage route that DLT checks from your wage record. Payments run from $148 to $1,150 a week, more with dependents.
What you get
- Up to $1,150 a week, or $1,552 with the maximum dependents’ allowance, for eligible leave.
- Up to eight weeks of caregiver payments.
- Job restoration and continued health benefits during covered leave.
What this covers
- The program is funded through worker contributions rather than a new fee to make a claim.
- The stated maximums depend on the benefit calculation and dependents’ allowance, rather than being a flat payment to every parent.
If you decide to apply
- Ask payroll whether your job is covered by Temporary Caregiver Insurance and how this leave overlaps with other leave.
- Your social worker can help you decide whether to pursue a TCI claim. The filing window is within 30 days after leave starts; the claim is not filed before the leave begins.
- Ask the care team for the medical documentation the claim requires.

After you ask
- The labor department decides the claim.
- The DLT TDI/TCI portal is the caregiver-claim entry point. DLT requires the treating healthcare provider’s certification of the serious health condition and need for your care, along with the claim information it requests. DLT says most eligible complete claims receive a first payment in about three to four weeks, but missing information or eligibility review can take longer. The claimant contact is 401-462-8420.
Good to know
You need seven consecutive days off. This benefit does not pay for a partial return to work or isolated clinic days.
Other details
- An employer can require caregiver leave to run at the same time as other family leave.
- Employer pay and other leave need to be coordinated with payroll; separate programs do not necessarily add extra weeks.
Official sources
“Would TCI pay part of my wages while I care for my child, and how would it fit with my employer’s leave and pay? Could you help me check the dates and claim requirements?”
Why I’m asking: I need to understand how much income and job protection we would have during a longer absence.
