Help paying for a sibling's child care

The SC Working Families Child Care Scholarship helps pay for eligible child care.

What it is

The SC Working Families Child Care Scholarship helps pay for eligible child care.

A sibling may still need child care while treatment changes the schedule. Right now only families in a protected category can apply new, and the special-needs category is for the child who has the need, not a sibling. DSS says whether an exception covers you.

Eligibility rules
  • The program’s income screen is 85% of state median income. DSS confirms the current dollar table and its effective period, then determines the household and income it counts.
  • Ordinarily the activity test includes 15 hours of work weekly. School, training or an open child-welfare case can offer other routes.
  • During the pause, the special-needs exception covers care for the child who has the special need, not a brother or sister. A sibling's care would have to fit one of the other categories still open.
What you get
  • Payment toward registered child care, with a possible family share.
What the help includes
  • The scholarship pays the registered child-care service directly. A family contribution can apply.

If you decide to go ahead
  • Your social worker can help DSS identify the accepted category, whose documentation is needed, which forms or assessments it accepts, the current processing time and the family copay. A pending request does not guarantee payment for care already arranged, and a treated child’s documentation does not automatically establish a sibling’s exception.
Good to know

The special-needs exception is for the child who has the documented need, not a sibling. Ask DSS whether any other protected category fits your family.
