What it is

SNAP puts monthly grocery money on a card for households that meet the food-assistance rules.

Rent, utilities and a drop in earnings can leave little for food. DSS checks household income and allowed expenses to work out SNAP. A household with an elderly or qualifying disabled member uses different income rules.

Eligibility rules
  • Gross monthly ceilings through September 30, 2026: two people $2,292; three $2,888; four $3,483; five $4,079; six $4,675.
  • The ordinary gross ceiling is 130% of the poverty line. Households with an elderly or qualifying disabled member use the net test at 100%.
  • DSS checks whether a categorical-eligibility rule removes the ordinary resource test. Otherwise its published resource limits and exclusions apply; a cancer diagnosis alone does not establish SNAP’s disability category.
  • Faster, seven-day processing applies when the household has under $150 of income this month and $100 or less in cash, or when income and cash together are less than rent and utilities.

  • Benefits generally available within seven calendar days for households entitled to expedited service.
What the help includes
  • A household with an elderly or qualifying disabled member may deduct eligible medical costs. DSS confirms the current standard-deduction amount, expense thresholds and when actual excess costs can be used. A cancer diagnosis alone does not establish SNAP’s disability category.

  1. Ask DSS to review food help, including the seven-day route if money is very short.
  2. Have income records, rent or mortgage costs, utility bills and medical expenses you pay yourself ready.

If you decide to go ahead
  • For eligible households completing the ordinary process, the standard is an opportunity to use benefits within 30 calendar days after filing. For an entitled expedited household, benefits generally must be available by the seventh calendar day after filing. DSS can explain the interview, identity check and any applicable special timing rule.
  • If you already get SNAP and pay drops, report it; the increase usually starts the month after DSS has the proof.
Good to know

A household with a member receiving SSI may qualify under the net-income test even above the usual gross screen.

  • The displayed gross-income table ends September 30, 2026. From October 1, the social worker can confirm the new income limits, maximum food benefit and any change to South Carolina’s medical deduction. The seven-day screen includes gross income below $150 with no more than $100 in liquid resources.

Watch out

  • Report a pay drop within days. The change normally starts the following month.
  • A household with a member on SSI is measured on a lower net test, so do not rule yourself out on the gross figure.

The trap: Report an income drop straight away on 1-800-616-1309. A qualifying drop normally changes the amount from the following month, not the month you report it, so every week of delay is money lost.
