Monthly cash aid

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families provides monthly cash when a family meets South Carolina’s financial rules.

What it is

Temporary Assistance for Needy Families provides monthly cash when a family meets South Carolina’s financial rules.

Cash aid helps when earnings fall during treatment. Passing the first screen is not enough; a second, lower test after allowances decides. A parent caring for an ill child can be excused from work activities with the care team's letter.

Eligibility rules
  • The monthly gross entry ceilings are $1,629 for two people, $2,053 for three and $2,477 for four.
  • For four people, a separate need standard is $1,339 after allowances. Passing the gross screen does not settle this second test.
  • DSS confirms the current resource limit and which property and savings count. A caregiver work exemption needs medical verification that the person receiving care cannot manage alone.
What you get
  • Monthly cash, with the amount based on the assistance group and income.
  • A possible exemption from work activities when a doctor verifies the care you must give.
What the help includes
  • DSS calculates the grant from the assistance group, income it counts and payment standard for the month. Your social worker can ask DSS for the current standard and an estimate before your family relies on an amount.
  • The income figures shown here apply through September 30, 2026. DSS confirms the payment standard and any later income table.
If you decide to apply
  1. Ask DSS to review cash aid alongside food help if you decide to apply.
  2. Have income records, bank balances and proof of who lives with you ready.
  3. Ask the team for a letter if caring for your child prevents work activities.

If you decide to go ahead
  • The decision standard is 30 days. An approval normally includes a work-activity plan unless an exemption applies.
Good to know

A child receiving SSI is left out of the cash-aid group. Time limits can also affect eligibility.

Other details
  • The usual time limits are 24 months in any ten years and 60 months in a lifetime, with exceptions.
  • A doctor's letter can excuse you from work activities, but it does not stop the 24-month and 60-month clocks on its own; ask DSS about a caregiver or hardship exception.
Ask your social worker

“Could cash aid help while earnings are lower, and would the care our child needs excuse work activities? Could you help compare it with SSI and explain the time limits?”

Why I’m asking: I want to understand the amount we might receive and the responsibilities that come with it.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Apply, report income and savings, and ask for the caregiver exemption in writing.

Your social worker

The oncology team can write the verification the exemption needs.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The Department of Social Services.
Ask the agency
“Our income has stopped while my child is in treatment. Can we apply for cash aid, and can the caregiver exemption apply with a letter from the doctor?”

How to apply

First step: Apply through the Department of Social Services in the same visit as food help.

  1. Apply in the same visit as food help, so one income check covers both.
  2. Ask for the caregiver exemption from work activities, with the doctor's verification.

Official application / program page ↗

Where it starts: Apply through the Department of Social Services, in the same visit as food help.

What to gather

  • Proof of income for everyone in the household
  • Bank balances
  • Proof of who lives at home

How long: The processing standard is 30 days.

What a yes looks like

A monthly payment and a work-activity plan, unless the caregiver exemption applies.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Usually the second income test or the savings limit. Ask which, and ask about food help in the same breath.

Watch out

  • There are two income tests, not one, and the second is much lower.
  • A child getting SSI is not counted in a cash-aid group.
  • The clock is strict: 24 months in any ten years and 60 in a lifetime.

Dates that change this

2025-10-01: These cells are the table in force to September 30, 2026. The replacement table due in October 2026 was not published in the sources checked.

The numbers and the rules

The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.

What it is worth

Cash aid up to $541 a month for four, with an entry ceiling of $2,477 a month for four and a $2,500 savings limit.

  • $1,629/month — Household of 2, gross monthly entry ceiling
  • $2,053/month — Household of 3, gross monthly entry ceiling
  • $2,477/month — Household of 4, gross monthly entry ceiling
  • $1,339/month — Household of 4, need standard after allowances
  • $449/month — Largest monthly payment for a household of 3
  • $541/month — Largest monthly payment for a household of 4
  • $2,500 — Savings limit

Legal protection: A caregiver can be excused from work activities where a doctor has verified that the person cared for cannot manage alone

What it costs the family: Nothing to apply.

The eligibility facts, as published

Income
gross entry ceiling by assistance-unit size, then a lower need standard after allowances
Resources
$2,500
Time limit
24 months in any ten-year period, and 60 months in a lifetime, with exceptions
Exclusion
a child receiving SSI is not eligible in the assistance unit
Processing standard
30 days

The trap: Passing the entry ceiling is not the whole test: a second, much lower need standard applies after allowances, $1,339 a month for four. The clock is also strict, 24 months in any ten years and 60 months in a lifetime.
