What it is

South Dakota’s energy assistance program helps eligible households with heating costs.

Heating bills can be difficult when work changes during treatment. LIEAP checks the previous three calendar months, so a new pay cut may take time to affect the calculation. A scheduled shutoff can also matter.

Eligibility rules
  • You must live in South Dakota. The income period is the three calendar months before the month you apply.
  • For the 2025–2026 heating season, the three-month limits were $10,575 for two people, $13,325 for three, $16,075 for four and $18,825 for five.
  • The limits for the coming season are set each autumn; call 800-233-8503 for this season's figures and the crisis deadline.
What you get
  • A payment toward eligible home heating costs.
  • A route to ask about weatherization help.

  • Weatherization is separate help with the home’s energy use. Economic Assistance can explain the available route.
If you decide to apply
  1. If you decide to apply, ask Economic Assistance or the hospital social worker to go through the energy application with you.
  2. Have three months of income records, heating-account details and any shutoff notice ready.

  • If heat is about to be cut off or the tank is empty, tell DSS that when you apply; a crisis request is handled faster than a regular one.

  1. Apply with the last three months of pay slips, not just this month's.
  2. If a shutoff is scheduled in the heating season, say so on the application.

Expect friction on: The test looks at the three months before you apply, so a family whose pay has only just dropped can be measured on the months it was still earning

The trap: The three-month look-back cuts both ways. If a parent stopped work last month, the two months before still count; apply anyway, and apply again later if the picture changes.
