What it is

SNAP puts money for groceries on an EBT card each month.

A pay cut can change what grocery help your family qualifies for. South Dakota checks household income, then allowable expenses to work out the amount. Some households qualify through special rules rather than the ordinary gross-income test.

Eligibility rules
  • For three people, the ordinary gross-income screen is $2,888 a month through September 30, 2026; different income-screen rules can apply to a household with a qualifying elderly or disabled member or categorical eligibility. DSS checks the household, countable income and deductions.
  • The published gross monthly lines are $2,888 for three people and $3,483 for four through September 2026. New federal tables start October 1, 2026.
  • When SNAP resource limits apply, they are $3,000, or $4,500 for a household with a qualifying elderly or disabled member, through September 30, 2026. From October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, those limits are $3,000 and $4,750. DSS checks which assets count and whether an exemption applies.

What the help includes
  • For a member aged 60 or older, or meeting SNAP’s disability definition, allowed unreimbursed medical costs above $35 can qualify for a deduction. DSS confirms its current standard-deduction option and eligible expenses.
  • For three people the first screen is $2,888 a month before deductions; the amount is then set on income after rent, utilities and child care are taken off.
If you decide to apply
  1. Your hospital social worker can compare SNAP with your current income and help with BEES if you choose it.
  2. Have current pay records and household expense information ready. Explain any recent income drop.
  3. Ask about expedited benefits if you have very little money coming in or available.

After you ask
  • A reported drop in pay needs supporting records before an increased benefit can be calculated.
  • Expedited benefits are due by the seventh calendar day after filing when a qualifying test is met. One test is monthly gross income below $150 and liquid resources no more than $100. Another compares income plus liquid resources with rent or mortgage plus utilities. A destitute migrant or seasonal farmworker household can qualify with liquid resources no more than $100. Identity and other processing requirements still apply.
Good to know

Medical costs only count toward the amount for a household member who is 60 or older or receives a disability benefit such as SSI. A diagnosis on its own does not open that deduction.

  • The first gross-income screen is not a final decision. The state checks the household and any categorical route.
  • DSS confirms whether any Child Care Services participation opens a categorical route. A diagnosis or pending SSI application alone does not establish SNAP disability status.

Watch out

  • The gross test is not the only route; categorical households pass it outright.
  • An increase in benefits needs the new income verified, so send the pay slip.
  • Only allowed, unreimbursed medical costs for a member meeting SNAP’s elderly or disability rules can support the medical deduction.

Dates that change this

2026-10-01: USDA published FY2027 adjustments August 21, 2026. From October 1, 2026 through September 30, 2027, the three-person gross/net screens are $2,960/$2,277 monthly and resource limits are $3,000 or $4,750 for qualifying elderly/disabled households. FY2026 applies through September 30, 2026.

2026-09-11: South Dakota's SNAP manual cover is dated April 2026 in one rendering and July 2026 in another. No figure differs between them, but the version is unsettled. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

The trap: Medical deductions are limited to allowed, unreimbursed costs for a household member who is at least 60 or meets SNAP’s disability definition. A leukemia diagnosis or a pending SSI application does not by itself establish that definition. Your hospital social worker can help DSS check the qualifying benefit and the expenses.
