TANF offers monthly cash help for eligible families. A relative raising a child may have a separate child-only route.

TANF helps with everyday costs when there is little income. Earnings are counted after a deduction of $90 plus a fifth of the rest, and South Dakota does not publish the income line for getting on, so the office runs the sum. A relative raising the child gets a child-only payment, $414 a month for one child.

Eligibility rules
  • The state counts the assistance unit, rather than everyone at the address. The child-only table counts eligible children.
  • The earnings deduction is $90 plus 20% of the remainder for each employed member. The state also checks the grant group, living arrangement, other income and assets. A wages-only illustration is not an entry limit.
  • The savings limit is $2,000. In a child-only case, a relative caregiver's own income and savings are not counted; a parent's are.

What the help includes
  • The maximum parent-included grant for three people is $672 monthly in independent living or $486 in shared living. For four in independent living it is $743.
  • Caretaker Relative maximums are $414 for one eligible child, $486 for two and $557 for three.
  • DSS rounds payments down and does not issue payments below $10. DSS can confirm any diversion payment, repayment terms and the current state plan.

  1. Your hospital social worker can discuss the grant group and help with TANF through BEES if it fits.
  2. Have income records and details of who cares for each child ready. Ask about the Caretaker Relative route if that describes your family.

Other details
  • An adult's own TANF is limited to 60 months in a lifetime. A parent needed at home to care for a disabled family member can be excused from work activities with medical documentation.

Dates that change this

2026-09-11: The countable-resource ceiling is $2,000. DSS applies the assistance-unit rules and income deductions; a published maximum grant or simplified wages-only estimate is not a universal entry income limit. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

2026-09-30: The posted state plan runs from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2026. DSS must confirm the replacement plan and any changes to documented caregiver work exclusions.

The trap: The assistance unit is not the household. The Caretaker Relative table counts eligible children only, so three children is $557 a month whether or not other people live in the house. And there is a sixty-month lifetime limit on an adult getting TANF, which does not apply to a child-only case.
