Food for young children and pregnancy (WIC)

WIC provides food benefits for pregnant people, new mothers, babies and children under five.

What it is

WIC provides food benefits for pregnant people, new mothers, babies and children under five.

WIC can help with food for a young child or during pregnancy and after birth. It is a separate program from SNAP. An older child’s cancer diagnosis does not make that child eligible for WIC.

Eligibility rules
  • The annual income limit is 185% of poverty. Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation establishes income eligibility.
  • The line is about $3,336 a month for two people, $4,212 for three, $5,088 for four and $5,963 for five.
  • The WIC clinic checks residency and nutritional need as well as income and age or pregnancy category. Eligible postpartum or breastfeeding participants may qualify even when no one is currently pregnant. The clinic confirms accepted identity, residency and income documents.

Good to know

WIC is limited to pregnancy, eligible new mothers and children under five. Another young child in the family may qualify even when the child in treatment is older.

  • For three people, the annual limit starting July 1, 2026 is $50,542, or about $4,212 a month when rounded up. The WIC clinic decides the actual income comparison and can use Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation to establish income eligibility.

The trap: It is for the under-fives and for pregnancy, not for the child with leukaemia unless that child is under five. A ten-year-old with leukaemia does not open WIC for the family.
