What it is

WIC serves children under 5 and pregnant or recently pregnant parents. The clinic checks each person’s nutrition needs. Income up to 185% of poverty can qualify, while Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation establishes income eligibility. An application alone does not.
Eligibility rules
- Under 5, or pregnant or recently pregnant; each person is checked separately.
- The income line is 185% of poverty: $61,050 a year for four people or $50,542 for three, effective July 1, 2026. Medicaid, SNAP or TANF participation establishes income eligibility; the clinic still checks other requirements.
- South Dakota WIC checks age or pregnancy category, residency, income eligibility and nutrition need. Your WIC clinic confirms any citizenship or immigration rules and which identity, residency and income documents it accepts. Medicaid’s documentation rules do not decide WIC eligibility.
What you get
- A monthly food package for each eligible child, usable alongside SNAP.
- Nutrition support and referrals.
What it is not
- Not the whole grocery budget. Prescribed formulas are not automatically covered; ask the clinic.

After you apply
- WIC serves each eligible person separately: the child under 5. A child aged 5 or over cannot be served through WIC; a pregnant or recently pregnant parent could be served in their own right.
Good to know
The clinic can assess income directly while another benefit application is pending. Each eligible family member has a separate assessment.
