Rides to appointments through TennCare

TennCare can help you get to covered appointments when transportation is a barrier.

What it is

TennCare can help you get to covered appointments when transportation is a barrier.

Travel to repeated appointments can become difficult even when treatment is covered. Your child’s TennCare plan checks transportation needs. Qualifying longer trips can include help for an approved adult traveling with your child.

Eligibility rules
  • Your child must have TennCare and need transportation help for a covered appointment. The broker can also check approved mileage payments when family or friends drive.
What you get
  • Free rides to covered medical appointments.
  • Travel help for an approved accompanying adult on qualifying trips.
What the help covers
  • The ride broker can discuss approved mileage payments when family or friends drive. Qualifying longer trips can include meals, lodging and an accompanying adult. Treatment approval does not itself approve travel costs. The broker confirms approved travelers, nights, costs, mileage rates, receipts and payment methods before you commit to expenses. Privately booked taxis or ride-share trips are not automatically repaid.
If you decide to apply
  1. If you choose to arrange a ride, the plan’s ride company needs your clinic schedule and insurance card.
  2. Ask about standing rides for repeated visits and any adult travel, meals or lodging support.

After you ask
  • When you book, say who has to travel and whether you need the return trip. You supply the car seat. If a routine booking is too late, the clinic can tell the broker the trip is urgent.
Good to know

Routine rides need at least two business days’ notice. A late urgent request needs the clinic to confirm urgency.

Ask your social worker

“Could TennCare arrange our clinic trips, and what travel help could cover an adult staying with our child? Could you help check the booking rules and any costs before we rely on it?”

Why I’m asking: I want a dependable way to get to treatment and understand the costs of longer trips.

Who does what

The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.

You

Call the number for your plan, give the clinic schedule, and book two business days ahead.

Your social worker

The clinic gives you the standing schedule and confirms urgency when a ride is needed at short notice.

The care team

Records and letters when the application asks for them.

Who decides
The booking company your health plan uses.
Ask your social worker
“Can you help me set up standing rides for clinic days through my plan, and ask what travel help there is for me when we go far from home?”

How to apply

First step: Call your plan’s booking line this week: BlueCare 1-855-735-4660, TennCare Select 1-866-473-7565, UnitedHealthcare 1-866-405-0238, Wellpoint 1-866-680-0633.

  1. Call the number for your plan this week and set up standing rides for clinic days.
  2. Before any trip to a hospital far from home, ask the plan in writing what it pays toward meals and lodging for the adult going with the child.

What to gather

  • The health plan card and member number
  • The clinic schedule for the next few weeks
  • Your address and the hospital address

How long: Routine rides need two business days. A ride the clinic confirms is urgent can be arranged sooner.

What a yes looks like

A booking reference and standing rides on clinic days.

What a no looks like, and the next move

Ask whether it was the notice period or the service, and ask the clinic to call and confirm urgency.

Watch out

  • Book routine rides at least two business days ahead.
  • The number depends on your health plan, not your county. Check the card.
  • Meal and lodging rates were not published. Ask the plan in writing before a long trip.

Dates that change this

2026-01-01: The booking companies listed are the ones on the state page. Their contract dates were not published, so confirm the number on your health plan card before a first trip. (not yet confirmed against the final rule)

What it is worth

The plan assesses rides, mileage and any needed escort, meals or lodging separately. Each type of help needs approval; TennCare membership alone does not approve every trip or expense.

Covers: Rides to any TennCare-covered service · Separately approved escort, mileage, meals or lodging support on qualifying trips.

What it costs the family: None.

The eligibility facts, as published

Coverage
TennCare
Condition
The broker assesses transportation need, including whether available transportation is suitable; car access alone does not settle every mileage or travel-support request.
Booking
at least two business days ahead for a routine ride; a late urgent request needs the provider to confirm the urgency

Expect friction on: Routine rides have to be booked two business days ahead · Which company you call depends on which health plan your child is in

The trap: Book routine rides at least two business days ahead. A late request only goes through if the clinic confirms it is urgent, so ask the nurse to call rather than trying to argue it yourself.
