What it is

TennCare also has coverage for a parent or relative raising a dependent child.

A cut in your pay can open coverage for you as well as your child. Tennessee covers a parent only at or under the poverty line and only while a dependent child under 18 is at home; it did not widen Medicaid to other adults. Above the line, HealthCare.gov with a subsidy is the route.

Eligibility rules
  • A dependent child must be under 18, or 18 and a full-time student. You must live in Tennessee.
  • The published 2026 base standard is 100% of poverty: $1,804 monthly for two people or $2,750 for four.
  • With the state's allowance, the line is about $2,390 a month for three people and $2,887 for four.

  • The adult’s eligibility is considered separately even when the same application includes the child.

  • The decision uses current monthly income. A yearly income estimate can miss a recent pay cut.

Your child’s approval does not automatically mean you qualify. The adult income test is different.

How to apply

First step: Add yourself to your child’s TennCare Connect application. If you are over the line, call HealthCare.gov on 1-800-318-2596.

  2. If you are over the line and a job is ending, go to HealthCare.gov within 60 days.

Watch out

  • It is judged on this month, so apply the month the pay stops rather than waiting.
  • Being above the parent screen does not settle other TennCare categories or eligibility for a Marketplace subsidy.
  • The state checks dependent-child status and other categories before deciding which adult coverage routes fit.
