What it is

SNAP puts monthly grocery money on a card you use to buy food.

A pay cut can change the amount of grocery help available. Tennessee normally checks both gross income and income after deductions. A household with an elderly or disabled member can have different screening and medical-expense rules.

Eligibility rules
  • The ordinary screens are 130% of poverty before deductions and 100% after deductions.
  • The 2026 table lists gross limits of $2,888 for three people and $3,483 for four; net limits are $2,221 and $2,680.
  • One expedited screen is under $150 monthly gross income and no more than $100 in liquid resources.
  • A household with a member who is 60 or older or receives a disability benefit such as SSI skips the gross-income test. A diagnosis on its own does not open that route.
  • Other expedited routes include gross income plus liquid resources below rent or mortgage plus utilities, or a qualifying destitute migrant or seasonal household with liquid resources at most $100. The caseworker checks the whole household, not just whether one child has SSI.

What the help covers
  • For a household with an elderly or disabled member, eligible out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 monthly can be deducted.
  • For October 1, 2025 through September 30, 2026, a three-person household’s maximum allotment is $785 monthly. Income after permitted deductions determines the actual amount.

After you ask
  • Ordinary processing is within 30 days. Households qualifying for expedited service must have access to benefits within seven calendar days, not just an interview or decision.
  • A later pay drop can be reported through the customer portal with income evidence.
Good to know

A household with an elderly or disabled member skips the first screen. Your child's cancer alone does not count; a disability benefit such as SSI does.

Expect friction on: An interview is usually part of it · Reporting a pay drop takes documents, and the month it takes effect was not published

The trap: Out-of-pocket medical costs above $35 a month can be deducted, but only for a household member who is elderly or has a disability finding. A child in treatment does not have that finding until a disability award arrives, so do not count on the deduction in the first months.
