A way to stay on TennCare when it is ending (TennCare Standard)
TennCare Standard is a narrow route for a child already on TennCare whose ordinary coverage is ending.
What it is
TennCare Standard is a narrow route for a child already on TennCare whose ordinary coverage is ending.
This route concerns a child who already has TennCare and is losing ordinary Medicaid eligibility. TennCare checks separate uninsured and medically eligible continuation branches. This is not a new route into TennCare from outside.
Eligibility rules
- The child must be under 19 and already enrolled in TennCare.
- The uninsured and medically eligible branches have different income, insurance-access and medical requirements. A cancer diagnosis alone does not establish either branch.
- The 211% figure is not a maximum for the medically eligible continuation route. TennCare reviews whether a child already enrolled can continue under the uninsured or medically eligible Standard rules when ordinary Medicaid eligibility ends; the income boundary, five-point allowance and medical or uninsurability test need an agency decision. This is not a general new-applicant buy-in for any family above that income.
- A child with no other insurance can continue under this route up to about 211% of poverty. Above that, a child can continue only if the state finds them medically eligible.
- Tennessee policy 005.016 also changes the noncitizen rules for listed Standard child categories on October 1, 2026. TennCare must review the child’s status, waiting-period exceptions, coverage dates and notices; the child-coverage card explains the dated categories.
What you get
- Continued TennCare if the child meets this separate category’s requirements.
What the help covers
- This category preserves TennCare rather than providing a separate cash payment.
If you decide to apply
- If coverage is ending, the social worker can review the notice and continuation options with you.
- If you choose to pursue this route, the counselor can help contact TennCare Connect with the notice and medical records.

After you ask
- TennCare decides whether the child can move into the category as existing coverage ends.
- The medical packet is usually due within 60 days of the notice; the counselor can check the date on your child's letter.
Good to know
The end date on the notice matters. This route requires existing TennCare enrollment.
Other details
- The oncology social worker can document active treatment and the lack of another coverage route.
Official sources
“If our child’s TennCare is ending, could TennCare Standard keep treatment covered? What restrictions would apply, and could you help us ask before the end date?”
Why I’m asking: I want to avoid a gap in treatment coverage if our child loses the current category.

Who does what
The three parts, side by side. The agency decides; nobody on this page does.
You
Call before the end date on the notice and ask for this group by name.
Your social worker
The oncology social worker can write that your child is in active treatment and has no other route to coverage.
The care team
Records and letters when the application asks for them.
- Who decides
- TennCare.
- Ask the agency
- “My child is on TennCare and the notice says it is ending. Can you check TennCare Standard, Medically Eligible?”
How to apply
First step: If a notice has arrived, call 1-855-259-0701 and ask about TennCare Standard, Medically Eligible.
- Keep the notice with the end date on it.
- Call TennCare Connect and ask for this group by name before that date.
Official application / program page ↗
Where it starts: Call 1-855-259-0701 and ask for TennCare Standard, Medically Eligible, by name before the end date on the notice.
What to gather
- The notice with the end date
- A letter from the oncology team saying your child is in active treatment
How long: Not published. Call well before the end date on the notice.
What a yes looks like
Coverage carries on without a gap.
What a no looks like, and the next move
Ask why, and ask in the same call about CoverKids and about Katie Beckett.
Watch out
- It is only for a child already enrolled. It is not a way in from outside.
- Nobody offers it. Ask for it by name before the end date on the notice.
The numbers and the rules
The arcane layer, kept on purpose. Checked September 11, 2026.
What it is worth
Keeps a child who is already on TennCare covered when the ordinary income category ends.
Covers: The same TennCare benefits the child already has
Legal protection: A route to stay covered rather than fall to no insurance when the income category ends
What it costs the family: Not published in the source checked. Ask the caseworker.
The eligibility facts, as published
- Age
- under 19
- Enrollment
- the child must already be enrolled in TennCare
- Insurance access
- no access to insurance, and a health condition that makes the child hard to insure
- Income
- the guide shows this group at 211 percent of the poverty line and above, which reads as a floor rather than a ceiling
The trap: This is not an open disability door and it is not a way in from outside. It only carries a child who is already enrolled across the moment the ordinary category ends, so the call has to happen before the end date on the notice.
